TL; DR
  • Skoda India’s head, Petr Janeba, has confirmed the existence of an EV for the Indian market.
  • The company’s first electric SUV for the market will be official by September 2025.
  • The company now has three options — the Elroq, Enyaq, and the Enyaq Coupe.
  • Whichever model the company goes with, whether it will import it or manufacture it locally in the country is something that remains to be seen.

For a long time, the Czech automaker Skoda has contemplated launching an EV in India and, more importantly, its first EV for the subcontinent. Initially, it was believed that the Enyaq iV could be the perfect fit for the Indian market. However, in a recent appearance, the company’s country head, Petr Janeba, has said (or rather not said) something that has surprised many people.

Expect A Skoda Electric SUV To Go Official By September

Skoda Will Release An Electric SUV By September 2025, But Which One?

In a conversation with Autocar Professional, Skoda India’s head, Petr Janeba, has confirmed the existence of an EV for the Indian market. The company’s first electric SUV for the market will be official by September 2025. However, the executive didn’t confirm whether it will be the Enyaq iV. Does that mean we’ll see another Skoda EV on Indian roads?

For those catching up, Skoda India has showcased the Enyaq on multiple occasions. Last year, the company stepped into the Bharat Mobility Expo with Enyaq iV as one of its key offerings. Going by that, it should be the Enyaq iV that debuts in India as the first Skoda EV, right? Well, not so fast.

The Company Has Three Options To Choose From: Elroq, Enyaq, And Enyaq Coupe

Skoda Elroq

Most recently, Enyaq received a mid-cycle update for the global markets. Hence, the variant showcased in the country has already become outdated (without making it to the dealership or the Indian roads per se). Further, the automaker now has a new electric SUV on the cards, the Skoda Elroq, which is based on the same platform as the Enyaq (the MEB platform).

As a result, the company now has three options — the Elroq, Enyaq, and the Enyaq Coupe — and the more options to choose from, the higher the choice becomes. The company hasn’t decided which of the three EVs to launch in India. Further, Janeba clarified how the decision will be based on the Indian government’s new EV policy, which should take shape by March 2025.

Skoda Seems To Be Waiting For The Government’s Revised EV Policy

Last year’s EV policy required companies to invest at least half a billion dollars in the country, localizing the manufacturing for reduced customs duty. Given that the government might revise the guidelines for the upcoming financial year, Skoda is taking its sweet time to choose which EV would suit its Indian business the best.

Whichever model the company goes with, whether it will import it or manufacture it locally in the country is something that remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the company is preparing its assembly lines for the launch of the second-generation Kodiaq in the country by the second quarter of 2025. Stay tuned for updates on Skoda’s vehicles and other latest auto news.
