Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC made its debut a few months ago and already powers a tonne of flagship devices. With that, Qualcomm is already working on the next-gen chip dubbed ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’, and seems like it is already being tested and with amazing results.

A Twitter (now X) user @faridofanani96, tweeted that an engineering sample of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, is being tested for its gaming prowess. The rumors suggest the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was able to run Genshin Impact (the game) for 45 minutes on a 1080p resolution and 60fps without breaking a sweat.

For the unversed, Genshin Impact is a performance-intensive game which is why running it on an early engineering sample without faltering is an impressive feat. Once the chip is fully developed, it could be able to reach the highest resolution that Genshin offers with the capped 60fps.

Additionally, reports suggest the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s Adreno 830 GPU is reportedly 10% higher in terms of performance on the 3DMark WildLife Extreme Stress Test compared to Apple’s M2 chip that powers Macs. If that’s the comparison today, it remains to be seen how the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC will be able to destroy most of its rivals once it arrives later this year.

Qualcomm is all set to use its custom-made Oryon cores with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC and this could be the reason behind such a massive performance uptick. However, this would make the chips expensive meaning MediaTek 9400 SoC could take a larger market share citing its lower pricing and better performance compared to its predecessors.

MediaTek 9400 SoC will use Arm’s Cortex cores possibly in a configuration of 3x Prime Cortex-X5 and 5x Cortex-Performance cores without any power-efficient cores similar to MediaTek 9300 SoC. These chips will be made on the TSMC N3 platform. On the other hand, Qualcomm was earlier believed to use TSMC, however, the latest intel suggests the chip-making giant could use a dual sourcing strategy deploying both TSMC and Samsung foundry to fab the chipsets using the 3nm process.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC will make it to the public later this year. It will power the flagship lineup of 2025 including Xiaomi, Samsung, and OnePlus, among others.
