After years of rumors, the Japanese tech giant Sony has finally revealed one of the most hyped gaming consoles of all time: the PS5 Pro. As the name suggests, the PS5 Pro offers some subtle yet powerful upgrades over the regular PS5 gaming console. These upgrades include a powerful GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. With the “big three,” the PS5 Pro is Sony’s “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date.”

PS5 Pro Design

While the PS5 Pro follows a similar design language as the PS5, there are quite a few differences. For instance, the console has diagonal ribbed vents on its sides. On the back, gamers will get an additional USB-C port instead of the USB-A port. Moreover, the height and width of the Pro console are similar to those of the non-Pro console, which would make swapping the PS5 with the PS5 Pro easier on entertainment centers or desks built specially for the console.
Interestingly, the PS5 Pro doesn’t ship with an optical disk drive. Instead, the console has a bigger 2TB SSD. Those who wish to run the games available on a disk drive can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive (the one compatible with the PS5) or swap out console covers (as and when they become available). It looks like Sony is advancing toward downloadable games as opposed to the ones on disk drives, as the PS5 Pro doesn’t ship with an optical drive and has a faster Wi-Fi configuration (which we’ll talk about in a bit).
Further, the PS5 Pro is compatible with the PS5 family of products, including the PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge controller, Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore.
PS5 Pro Features And Upgrades

The first thing that makes the PS5 Pro more powerful than the PS5 is the upgraded GPU. With the new console, the company offers a GPU that is up to 45% faster at rendering gameplay, making players’ experience much smoother. For those wanting more details, the console has 67% more Compute Units than the current generation PS5 and 28% faster memory.
Then, advanced ray tracking generates more dynamic reflections and refractions of light, creating closer-to-life graphics with realistic graphics. The development alloys PS5 Pro to cast the rays at double, and at times, even triple the speed of the current PS5 console.
Last but not least, the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling mechanism, produces a super sharp image. The machine learning-based technology adds more details to any scene, not just to the foreground elements but also to the ones in the background. With these three improvements, the PS5 Pro targets higher fidelity graphics at smoother frame rates (60 FPS) and 4K resolution.

The new console also ships with PS5 Pro Game Boost, a feature that applies to more than 8,500 backward-compatible games on the PS4 or PS5 that are available on the PS5 Pro. Then, there’s the Enhance Image Quality feature for PS4 games, which will improve the resolution of selected PS4 titles. In terms of connectivity, the PS5 Prio will launch with Wi-Fi 7 to offer higher download/upload speeds over wireless networks.
Last but not the least, the new console also supports 8K gaming and variable refresh rate. Although there aren’t many games that can leverage the new features, Sony says that about 50 games will be ready to utilize them when the console comes out in two months.
PS5 Pro Price And Availability

Announced at the event, the PS5 Pro will be available to purchase from November 7, 2024, at participating retailers and the company’s official website. Global pre-orders will open on September 26, 2024.
Regarding price, the PS5 Pro will cost buyers $699.99 for a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a copy of Astro-Playroom pre-installed. The disc-less console comes with the option to purchase the PS5 Disc Drive separately. The Indian pricing of the product isn’t out yet, but we expect the console to cost around Rs. 65,000 to 70,000 in the country.
