The home entertainment landscape in India is evolving rapidly. As families upgrade to cutting-edge OLED and Mini LED TVs, many also seek a premium sound system to complete their setup. Recognizing this trend, Sony—a global leader in consumer electronics—has revamped its TV and audio lineup with a new Bravia Theater branding. One of the first products to launch under this refreshed naming strategy is the Sony Bravia Theater Bar 9 soundbar, which we’ve been testing extensively.

Positioned just below the Bravia Theater Quad (review) in Sony’s home theater portfolio, the Bar 9 claims to offer a powerful audio experience without bundled satellite speakers. However, users looking for an expanded setup can pair it with Sony SA-RS5 Wireless Rear Speakers and a Sony SA-SW5 or SA-SW3 subwoofer. For this review, we tested the Bravia Theater Bar 9 with the RS5 surround speakers, placed behind our seating position, and the SW3 subwoofer, positioned to the left of the soundbar.

With premium Bravia 9 and Bravia 7 buyers considering the Theater Bar 9 as their go-to sound solution, key questions arise: Does it enhance Bollywood movies with cinematic depth? Is it the perfect soundbar for IPL 2025? How well does it handle streaming content from platforms like Netflix, JioCinema, Prime Video, and Apple TV+? Let’s dive into the review to find out.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 Soundbar Price & Availability

The Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 Soundbar is priced at ₹1,29,990/-. Sony India runs various sale offers, so I recommend checking the latest price before buying.

If you plan to buy Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9. In that case, we highly recommend buying a bundle with Sony SA-RS5 or Sony SA-RS3S Speakers and Sony SA-SW5 or Sony SA-SW3 Subwoofer.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 Soundbar + RS5 + SW3 Review: Design & Build Quality

If you’re familiar with Sony’s previous flagship soundbars, like the HT-A7000. In that case, you will find the Bravia Theater Bar 9 has a fresh, refined aesthetic. Designed to blend seamlessly into modern home decor, the Bar 9 features a mesh fabric wrap covering most of its plastic casing. Two LED indicators on the bottom right provide visual cues for power and adjustments. However, a small display—instead of relying solely on LEDs—would have been a welcome addition for better usability.

For this review, we tested the Bar 9 on its own before pairing it with the SA-RS5 wireless rear speakers and the SA-SW3 subwoofer. The RS5 speakers sport a semi-cylindrical design with a flat back, making them easy to position. Weighing 2.3 kg each, the RS5 wireless speakers feel sturdy and well-built.

They come with rubberized bottoms for grip and aluminum grilles on top to ensure they look premium from all sides. Wrapped in a dense, premium fabric, they integrate well into any living space. Notably, each SA-RS5 speaker features an up-firing driver to deliver immersive atmos sound effects.

The subwoofer, meanwhile, features a front-facing driver covered in mesh fabric and a down-firing driver for deeper bass response.

The Bar 9 can be placed on a tabletop or wall-mounted, with Sony including the necessary brackets and screws for easy installation. We opted to wall-mount it a few inches below our Bravia 9 TV, using the included S-Center cable for a direct audio connection. While the satellite speakers can also be wall-mounted, their brackets and screws are not included in the box, so you need to buy them separately.

Overall, the Sony Bravia Theater Bar 9 and its accompanying speakers and subwoofer boast a premium, well-constructed build. The soundbar’s dense plastic frame is wrapped in a tight fabric, which adds a luxurious feel but is also prone to dust accumulation. On the plus side, it effectively resists fingerprints, maintaining a clean look over time.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 Soundbar + RS5 + SW3 Review: Sound Performance

The Sony Bravia Theater Bar 9, when paired with the SA-SW5 subwoofer and SA-RS5 surround speakers, delivers a powerful 13-speaker setup, (20 phantom spekaers) featuring forward, side-firing, and upward-firing drivers. It leverages Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology to create an immersive surround sound experience, while built-in amplification eliminates the need for external components.

Audio Format Support

The Bar 9 supports a wide range of audio formats over eARC, including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, and various DTS formats, including DTS:X. Sony has also added support for newer forma – IMAX Enhanced, but this feature is only available when your setup has RS5 rear surround speakers are included in your setup.

Sound Performance: Standalone vs. Full Setup

As a standalone unit, the Bar 9 delivers bold, expansive sound, but it lacks the nuance found in some competitors like the Sonos Arc or Samsung Q990D. Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound widens the soundstage and adds some surround-like effects, but it doesn’t fully immerse the listener in the way a true 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 system would. While the soundbar does create a sense of height, it doesn’t fully replicate rear speaker presence, unlike the Sennheiser Ambeo, which delivers a more convincing surround effect in a single-unit form factor—albeit at a higher price point.

Adding the SW5 subwoofer significantly enhances the mid-range and bass response, giving action scenes more depth and punch. However, if you wish to unlock the true potential of this Sony setup, you must add the RS5 surround speakers. In our tests, the RS5 speakers added depth to overall sound, including dialogue placement.

Movies

If you are a movie buff, the Bar 9 with its companion setup will definitely impress you with its performance as it excels in front-stage performance, delivering impressive left-to-right channel separation. I tested various scenes from my favorite Hollywood and Bollywood movies to test the limits of this setup.

While watching Top Gun: Maverick and Dune Part 2, the Dolby Atmos effects are well-executed, creating a cinematic experience—especially at higher volumes. In Ready Player One, sound elements move convincingly across the front to back, delivering an impressive treat for my ears just like the director intended. Even in Bollywood hits like RRR, I enjoyed the thump in the background score as much as I enjoyed the song sung by the girl in the opening sequence of the movie.

A Night Mode is included to reduce loud explosions and enhance dialogue clarity. However, it comes at the cost of some surround effect immersion.

Music

The Bravia Theater Bar 9 also proves to be a solid speaker for music playback. We loved how the Bar 9 delivers punchy sound with excellent soundstage and instrument separation. The vocals were also clean. We noticed no distortion, even in high volumes. As far as Music playback is concerned, this Theatre Bar 9 setup performed much better than my Samsung HW-990D sound bar setup.

Vocal Clarity & Gaming Performance

The Bar 9 setup offers good vocal clarity. Dialogue remains sharp and intelligible, even at low volumes, making subtitles unnecessary in most cases.

The Bar 9 performs exceptionally well in gaming. In God of War and Black Myth Wukong, action sequences sound immersive, while in F1 24, engine sounds dynamically shift based on the camera angle, enhancing realism. The Bar 9 also supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), which means gamers can have a lag-free gaming experience.

Bass & Sound Customization

The SW3 subwoofer isn’t as powerful as the SW5. Still, it does offer enough well-controlled bass that enhances action sequences without overpowering the mix. While watching action sequences in the Dune or Mad Max Fury, weight to explosions and low-end effects without becoming intrusive. Adjusting the subwoofer level helped fine-tune the balance, ensuring it remained impactful without overwhelming dialogue.

Sony’s 360 Sound vs. Dolby & DTS

Sony’s 360-degree Spatial Sound Mapping gives the Japanese gain an upper hand over competitors. Sony’s self-developed decoder delivers a dynamic and expansive soundstage, making it an excellent choice for movie buffs.

If you prefer more widely accepted Dolby and DTS decoding, you can effortlessly switch to them from the app. We found DTS:X offers a more harmonic balance, while Dolby formats sounded somewhat underwhelming. The height settings allow for sound adjustments to align better with on-screen action, thanks to Sony’s spatial mapping, leading to consistent sound placement.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 Soundbar + RS5 + SW3 Review: Connectivity and Setup

Unlike some older Sony soundbars, the Bravia Theater Bar 9 doesn’t include an on-screen display. Sony has prioritized its Bravia Connect smartphone app, which lets you easily set up and adjust it for a better-personalized experience.

It uses your phone’s microphone, along with mics on the bar and rear speakers, to detect your sitting position and calibrate sound to sound best according to your sitting position. Once configured, you can control the soundbar’s volume via your TV remote using HDMI-CEC, eliminating the need for extra remotes.

Setup & Auto-Calibration

The Bravia Connect app seamlessly handles initial setup and network connection. The process was straightforward, with the app guiding us through Sony’s auto-calibration system, which tailors the sound output to the room’s acoustics. A brief 360-degree sound demo confirms whether calibration has been successfully completed.

By default, the Bar 9 is set to Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping. Still, users can tweak various audio enhancements to refine the listening experience. These settings can:

  • Improve dialogue clarity
  • Compensate for poor audio signals
  • Compress the dynamic range for better low-volume listening

While these adjustments can be useful, it is recommended to experiment one at a time, as using multiple enhancements together may introduce distortion.

If you’re adding Sony subwoofers or surround speakers, you’ll need to repeat the auto-calibration process. However, if you set up the complete system initially, the app automatically optimizes the entire setup, making adjustments more straightforward.

Sony Center Sync & Compatibility with Sony TVs

For those with compatible Sony Bravia TVs, Sony Center Sync allows the TV’s built-in speakers to work alongside the Bar 9. However, in our experience, the synergy between the Bravia 9 speakers and the Bar 9 resulted in a better center channel performance compared to when I used the Bar 9 standalone.

Connectivity & Gaming Features

The Bar 9 connects to modern smart TVs via HDMI ARC/eARC, supporting Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and HDR10. For gamers and home theater enthusiasts, the extra HDMI 2.1 input is a welcome addition, allowing 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz pass-through.

Key gaming features include:

  • VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) for smoother gameplay
  • Auto HDR and genre-based picture mode optimizations for PS5 owners

While the additional HDMI input is useful, the lack of extra digital or analog inputs limits compatibility with legacy devices like CD players or turntables.

Review Verdict: Should You Buy the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 SoundBar?

The Sony Bravia Theater Bar 9, when paired with RS5 surround speakers and the SW5 subwoofer, delivers a powerful, immersive experience that enhances movies, music, gaming, and general entertainment. While it doesn’t match the single-unit spatial performance of the Sennheiser Ambeo or the out-of-the-box surround effect of Samsung’s Q990D, its 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, clear vocals, and deep bass response make it a strong contender for home theater enthusiasts—especially those already invested in Sony’s Bravia TV ecosystem.
