Sony sticks to “If it ain’t broken, why to fix it” ideology with the new WH-1000XM4 over the ear headphones. Keep them side by side, and you would struggle to find the difference. But, there are few changes and pleasing refinements on the XM4.

Sony WH-1000XM4 Features

  • The 1000XM4 is running on QN1 noise-canceling processor that adapts to the atmospheric commotion. This is aided by a new system on the chip that samples the ambient noise 700 times per second for better cancellation. Sony claims this will be useful during air travel.
  • The earcups’ surface sports touch controls for music playback and other functions.
  • It sports the Adaptive Sound Control feature, which profiles your frequently visited locations and sets custom sound modes for each of them.
  • The headphone automatically auto-pause when it detects you are speaking something and when you stop, it auto resumes.
  • There is the Bluetooth multi-point connect facility which lets you connect simultaneously with two devices and swap seamlessly between each other.

  • It also gets Wear detection support, which means the headset will auto-pause and play when you take them off and wear back respectively.
  • Sony has included DSEE Extreme (on-device AI) that rebuilds details lost during digital compression.
  • You can easily pair the XM4 with your phone or other devices using Fast Pair.
  • Design-wise, although it’s pretty much the same as the predecessor, there are some improvements. For instance, the thickness of the headband has been trimmed a bit. And there seems to be more space within the earcups. Both of these should warrant a better fit and comfort.
  • The claimed battery life is 30 hours.

Now, most of this is carried over from the precursor (review). And if you want to know the difference between Sony WH-1000XM4 and Sony WH-1000XM3, check out our dedicated article on the same.
