Sony WH-1000XM3 (review) was credited as one of the, if not the best headphones money could buy. The company has finally announced its much-awaited successor — the Sony WH-1000XM4. But before you get too excited, let me tell you this is more like an iterative upgrade over the former.

Still, there are changes, new additions, and some minor refinements here and there. So, we will be covering them here.

Sony WH-1000XM4 vs WH-1000XM3: What’s new?

Sony WH1000XM3

Some of the key upgrades include –

  • Simultaneous connections between two devices with quick, smart switching. This is called Bluetooth Multipoint and is a must-have feature in a premium headset like this.
  • Wear detection for when you take off the headset and wear them back. Accordingly, it auto pause and play the audio.
  • Clear, convenient hands-free calling backed by “Precise Voice Pickup” which leverages the headphones’ five microphones and advanced audio signal processing to enhance call quality.
  • Speak-to-Chat feature pauses the audio output automatically when the user starts speaking. It will resume the music or whatever you were listening, once it detects that you’ve stopped speaking.
  • Edge-AI that claims to restore details lost in compression. This is called DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) Extreme.
  • Improved digital noise cancellation. The QN1 noise-canceling processor backed by an SoC samples atmospheric pressure and commotion 700 times per second.
  • There is support for Fast Pair which eases the whole pairing process.
  • Bluetooth 5.0 stability and optimizations
  • On the design front, Sony has shed the size of the headband and even the earcup’s interior seems more spacious. However, the color choices remain the same.

Rest, it’s said to pack 40mm drivers with Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) diaphragms, hi-res audio thanks to LDAC codec, and frequency coverage of up to 40kHz, just like the 1000XM3.

The similarities continue with its advertised 30hr battery life, quick charge for 10min charge for 5 hours playback, touch controls, and adaptive sound which auto-adjusts to your location and behavior.
