Xperia 1 II is Sony’s first 5G phone; announced alongside Xperia 10 II and Xperia Pro 5G

Sony has unveiled a bunch of smartphones including its first 5G flagship – the Xperia 1 II (One Mark Two). Being a 2020 show-stopper, the phone packs high-end specs like Snapdragon 865 and top-trim memory configuration. Sony is also betting big on the camera front in light of the discerning feature-set. For instance, the Xperia 1 II is the first phone with up to 20fps AF/AE tracking burst for continuous autofocus.

Besides, the company also unveiled the Xperia 10 II in the midrange and showcased its work-in-progress Xperia Pro with 360-degree antennas for mmWave 5G capability. The latter is said to be a limited-edition device. It supports HDMI input for broadcasting videos. But since it’s still under development, we will cover the other two here.

Let’s begin with the biggie ie., Xperia 1 II.

The phone sticks to the classy Sony aesthetics, which means a sturdy rectangle slab which is more squarish than curvy. Even the facade has symmetrical bezels, front-firing speaker duo, and a long 21:9 aspect ratio.

This Sony phone sports a 6.5-inch 4K (1644×3840) HDR OLED panel. It also incorporates display quality quotients such as 100% coverage in DCI-P3 gamut, HDR, 90Hz refresh rate and Motion Blur reduction technology.

The phone stands apart not just in looks but front-liner in internals too.

Sony Xperia One Mark Two marks the first Sony 5G (sub6 bands) phone. This is powered by an X55 modem bundled with Snapdragon 865 silicon. It ships with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (expandable up to 1TB).

Coming to the cameras, which has many highlights to share, the rear has a quartet and a single shooter up front. Primarily, there are three 12MP sensors (3x optical telephoto zoom and ultrawide included). Lastly, there is a 0.3MP 3D ToF depth sensor. The Zeiss optics-based cameras also treat you with –

  • Up to 20 fps burst shooting with 60 times per second AF/AE (Auto Exposure) calculations.
  • Real-time Eye AF for humans and animals.
  • Cinema Pro app, which is co-developed by CineAlta and can record in multiple frame rates and offer more manual controls such as touch autofocus and custom white balance option.

The selfie is ousted by an 8MP shooter.

Among other things, the handset also has Android 10 software, Dolby Atmos, HiFi certified, 360-degree audio, WiFi 6, Bluetooth v5.1, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, USB Type-C port, 3.5mm audio jack IP65/68 Dust/Water resistance, and side-mounted fingerprint reader which is also the power key. Heck, the phone can be connected to DualShock 4 PS4 controller right out of the box.

All of these and the phone ticks on a 4,000mAh battery backed by wireless charging and USB PD fast charger.

Sony Xperia 1 II, Sony Xperia 10 II pricing and availability

Sony has not revealed the pricing details of the phones. However, it has set a spring availability for both the phones. There is no word on Indian availability too.
