To strengthen the fight against spam calls and messages, the telecom regulator of India is going to ring some new rules to the table. These rules will be a strict step toward fighting against the spammers. The new rules will make all the telco giants in India use AI spam filters for their messaging and call-based services. TRAI came up with this because of the ever-growing numbers of online fraud and harassment.

A report regarding the same mentioned TRAI will need all the brands like Jio, Vodafone Idea, BSNL, and others to use artificial intelligence (AI) spam filters. The AI-based filters will recognize and block all promotional and fake calls and messages from fishy sources. In most of the cases, these messages and calls are used by scammers to conduct fraud and steal the money of innocent users.

What’s the update?

As soon as a rule was out in the open, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel agreed to use AI spam filters for blocking spam calls. Airtel has even confirmed the same via an official statement. However, Jio has not confirmed the same, but we can possibly get to see Jio following the same pretty soon. Now the update is that the feature will start rolling out on May 1, 2023. However, we don’t have a clear date related to the same.

What else is in the play?

If you are someone who wants to get rid of all kinds of spam calls and messages, then you can rely on TRAI’s DND or Do Not Disturb services. You can activate DND services for your number in order to block all kinds of spam and telemarketing calls. Follow the below-mentioned steps to activate DND on your device:

  • Open your SMS application and type ‘START’ in the text box.
  • Now, send the message to 1909.
  • Just after that, you will receive a list of categories with codes from your service provider.
  • Now choose the code for the category that you want to block permanently.
  • Finally, you will get a confirmation message for the same, and in 24 hours, the DNS services will start working on your phone.
