Tata Sierra Engine Specifications

Although Tata already has a 1.5-liter direct-injection turbo-petrol engine, the base models of the vehicle will feature a new 1.5-liter NA engine that shares its basic architecture with the turbo engine. However, since it is a naturally-aspirated engine, it doesn’t include the high-pressure fuel injection system and the turbocharger.
The 1.5-liter NA petrol engine, unlike the one on the Nexon, will feature four cylinders. It is expected to deliver 120hp of peak power and 140 Nm of peak torque, similar to the 1.5-liter NA petrol engine in the Maruti Grand Vitara, Hyundai Creta, and Kia Seltos. Reports also suggest that the company is working to lower overall NVH levels and increase fuel efficiency.
While reports don’t specify the transmission options available with the 1.5-liter NA petrol engine, we can make an educated guess. Other popular cars in the segment, such as the Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos, pair their 1.5L NA petrol engine with a six-speed manual transmission. The availability of an additional gear helps drivers extract more mileage from the drivetrain, especially while cruising at higher speeds.
Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara, on the other hand, sticks with a five-speed transmission for the base trim. While the Korean models also feature a CVT transmission, the Japanese competitor to the upcoming Tata Sierra boasts a six-speed torque-converter gearbox, which is still pretty fuel-efficient compared to other petrol-AT drivetrains.

Hence, Tata might want to equip the baseline Sierra trim with a six-speed manual transmission to achieve competitive fuel economy. The inclusion of a NA petrol engine could help the Indian automaker control the cost of the Sierra’s base trims, which are often the best-selling models in India.
On the other hand, the Sierra could also feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces up to 170PS and 350Nm of torque. This particular engine could be mated to a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque-converter unit on the Sierra (similar to the Harrier).
