TL;DR
- The first Samsung tri-folding smartphone could debut later this year.
- Samsung will only make 300,000 units of its first tri-foldable smartphone. This also indicates how the phone could only be available in select regions.
- Unlike the Huawei Mate XT, which follows a Z-shaped folding pattern, Samsung’s tri-folding handset could feature a G-shaped design.
Samsung has been working on a tri-folding smartphone for a long time but behind closed doors. Samsung Could Reveal The Tri-Folding Smartphone At Its Second Galaxy Unpacked Event

Samsung Will Make Limited Numbers Of The Tri-Folding Phone

A couple of days ago, we reported how Samsung reduced the production target for the upcoming foldables, and the same is true for the tri-folding smartphone. The report highlights how Samsung will only make 300,000 units of its first tri-foldable smartphone. This also indicates how the phone could only be available in select regions.
There’s a chance that Samsung could increase production if the foldable succeeds in its launch. However, nothing can be said with surety.
G-Shaped vs. Z-Shaped Tri-Folding Design
Unlike the Huawei Mate XT, which follows a Z-shaped folding pattern, Samsung’s tri-folding handset could feature a G-shaped design. In other words, the phone will fold twice toward its inside (imagine holding the left and the right screen panels and folding them toward the central panel).

Samsung reasons that the design is more durable than the Z-shaped design and will increase the durability of the tri-folding smartphone, specifically when it is not in use. Last but not least, the smartphone won’t feature an under-display selfie camera, which could be due to engineering complications or to reduce the manufacturing cost wherever possible.
