The Vietnamese Tesla rival, VinFast, wants to begin its Indian assembly facilities by June 2025. Later this year, the company plans to establish facilities in Indonesia. Initially, the automaker focused on the United States, but uncertainties about tariffs have led the company to change its roadmap.

VinFast To Focus On Indian And Indonesian Market

In a statement issued to Vingroup shareholders, Pham Nhat Young, the company’s CEO, mentioned that the company “will focus more on the Indonesian, Indian, and Philippine markets.”

He adds that the company isn’t planning to boost sales and redirect more of its resources to the United States and the European Union, citing the high logistics fees resulting from the uncertain tariffs imposed by the United States government.

Apparently, the company is eyeing the right time to continue with its efforts in North Carolina, but the developments could be delayed by three to four years.

VinFast’s Indian Facility Can Produce Up To 150,000 Vehicles

Last year, VinFast entered into an agreement with the Tamil Nadu state government, pledging an investment of up to $2 billion (about Rs. 17,000 crores) in the next five years. Out of the total, the company is willing to deploy $500 million (approximately Rs. 4,200 crores) over the next five years toward the manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi, due to its proximity to the seaport and airport.

The Thoothukudi plant in Tamil Nadu is expected to kick off operations by the end of June 2025. The EV manufacturing facility could generate employment for around 3000 to 3500 people. When ready, the plant should have an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles. We expect the plant to start producing VinFast EVs in 2026.

The VF 7 And VF 6 Could Be The First Vehicles From The Company

Earlier this year, VinFast showcased the VF 6 and the VF 7 during the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. Of the two, the VF 7 will debut in India as the company’s first electric SUV. The vehicle has a 75.3 kWh battery pack that provides up to 450 kilometers of range on a charge (as claimed by the company). The VF 6 will offer a slightly lower range than the VF 7, around 400 kilometers.
