Vivo X30 with Samsung’s Exynos 980 mid-range chipset will allegedly go official tomorrow. The two tech giants will hold an event in China on November 7 where this 5G powered smartphone is expected to be introduced.

A Vivo executive had earlier confirmed partnership with Samsung and the arrival of Exynos 980-powered Vivo phone by the year-end, but we didn’t expect this interesting mid-range chipset to show up this early, and that too first in a non-Samsung phone.

According to folks at DroidShout, the Vivo X30 is also expected to brandish an AMOLED panel that refreshes at 90Hz, a beefy battery, and UFS 2.1 storage. Anyways, more details shall be out by tomorrow.

Going by the 108MP quad-camera powered Mi CC9 Pro launched on November 5 and the upcoming Vivo X30, we expect to see Samsung aggressively pushing its tech outside of its own mobile division in 2020.

Update (November 8): All Vivo and Samsung announced at the conference was what we already knew. The Vivo X30 Pro will launch in December and it will be powered by Exynos 980. Fresh rumors also claim the presence of the upcoming Sony IMX686 sensor.

What makes the Exynos 980 interesting?

Apart from being the first (and only) Samsung chipset with integrated 5G modem, the 8nm process based Exynos 980 is also the first SoC to bring in Cortex-A77 cores that are expected to show 20 to 35% performance gains over very successful Cortex-A76 cores on flagship chipsets.

The mid-range Exynos 980 favors power efficiency over performance and clocks the 2 big Cortex-A77 cores at 2.2GHz. The other 6 cores are regular Cortex-A55. Samsung employs Mali G76 GPU that you’d find on flagships likes of Galaxy Note10+, but this being a mid-range SoC the cores have been reduced by half (MP5).

The 5G Modem supports Sub-6 5G but not mmWave (which is perfectly reasonable for the mid-range positioning). The Exynos 980 also integrates Samsung’s own NPU and supports up to 108MP cameras.

So, overall, the Exynos 980 will succeed the Exynos 9610 but is expected to bring substantial performance gains and support for modern trends to mid-range Samsung and other phones next year.
