TL; DR
- vivo Y500 has been launched in China with an 8,200 mAh silicon-carbon battery in an 8.2mm slim body.
- The device supports 90W charging too.
- Specs are underwhelming with Dimensity 7300 and a basic 50MP + 2MP camera setup.
- At an expected price of ₹22,000, the device is expected to launch in India by the end of this year.
vivo has launched the vivo Y500 in China with an 8,200 mAh battery inside a body that measures just 8.2mm in thickness. Batteries in the 7,000 mAh range have been done before, but crossing the 8,000 mAh mark in a phone you can actually buy is on another level.

Recently, realme showed off a concept phone with a 15,000 mAh battery in an 8.8mm frame, but that was still a concept. vivo’s Y500, on the other hand, is available for purchase in China right now, making it one of the most practical examples of large-capacity battery tech in a mainstream device.
The Y500 uses silicon-carbon battery technology, which allows higher energy density compared to the usual graphite-based setups. This lets vivo fit 8,200 mAh while keeping the phone slimmer and lighter.

For charging, it supports 90W FlashCharge, and reverse charging is included as well. The HONOR Power also had an 8,000 mAh battery but it only charged at 66W.
The design avoids bulk despite the battery, weighing 213g, and comes with IP68, IP69, and IP69+ certification for dust and water resistance. On paper, that makes the device far more durable than most mid-range phones.

However, the rest of the hardware is not as impressive. The Y500 runs on MediaTek’s Dimensity 7300 chip, paired with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB or 512GB storage. There is a 50MP OV50D main camera, 8MP front camera, and the software is Android 15 with OriginOS 5.
Pricing in China starts at ¥1,399 ($200 or ₹17,000), and an India launch under ₹22,000 is expected. We are not expecting this to launch in India anytime soon as the Y400 was launched only recently. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the vivo Y500’s 8,200 mAh battery? Could this be the new normal for mid-range phones? Let us know in the comments section below.
