The Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp is working on a new feature called Secret Code. Known WhatsApp updates tracker, WABetaInfo spotted the feature in the app’s Android beta v2.23.21.8. Earlier this year, the platform released a Chat Lock feature. It locks select chats in a folder that requires a passcode or biometric scan for access. From what it looks like, Secret Code on WhatsApp is another feature that will enhance users’ privacy by protecting chats.

What Is Secret Code On WhatsApp?

Secret Code is a WhatsApp feature under development. WABetaInfo first spotted it on October 6, 2023. In its current state, secret codes help beta testers set up a custom code for their locked chats. This adds another layer of protection to users’ chat. While the default Chat Lock feature relies on the phone’s password or biometric scanner, it risks users’ chat privacy if someone knows how to unlock the phone.

On the flip side, the Secret Code feature will enable users to set a different passcode for their hidden chats, which means that even if someone gets to know their phone’s passcode and unlocks it, the chats would remain secure. WABetaInfo also mentions that using Secret Code, WhatsApp will allow users to synchronize their chat locks across all the linked devices.

The WhatsApp Secret Code feature is currently under development, so even beta testers don’t have access. However, given that it focuses on increasing users’ privacy, there’s a good chance that WhatsApp will run the clock on this and push it as a part of a stable app update soon. Stay tuned for more updates on new WhatsApp features in testing and others in development.
