vivo’s foldable journey started back in 2022 and since then isn’t just about bending screens — it’s about reshaping expectations. The vivo X Fold3 Pro, which was launched last year in India, brought amazing features like a thin design, large battery, a powerful ZEISS camera system, and more.

That’s precisely the reason why vivo was voted by the audience as the Best Foldable Phone of 2024 at the Smartprix People’s Choice Awards 2024. Now, that the brand has dropped the teaser for the vivo X Fold5, we expect, the brand to doubles down on a vision it’s been building since the original X Fold: foldables that don’t just offer you flaunt value, they are also serious smartphones which perform most talks better than regular flagship smartphones.

The vivo X Fold3 Pro was already one of the slimmest and lightest foldables on the market, and vivo is taking it a step further with the refined and featherlight X Fold5, delivering premium productivity without compromise. The X Fold5 takes innovation to the next level with a new hinge design made from advanced FS55 materials. It has undergone extensive testing, with over 600,000 folding and unfolding cycles. Additionally, the device features AI-enhanced multitasking tools and a professional-grade ZEISS imaging system that is specifically designed for creators, rather than just for casual photography.

vivo’s Foldables Shape its Broader Smartphone Portfolio

vivo’s X Fold series has consistently pushed the boundaries of foldable smartphone technology. The high-brightness displays, power-efficient battery architectures, and multitasking software innovations have set new benchmarks for the foldable category. With every new generation of X Fold, vivo has not only advanced the category but it has also redefined what users expect from premium smartphones.

The Lightest and Slimmest Foldable vivo Has Ever Created

The X Fold5 weighs just 217 grams (Titanium Gray variant without screen-protector), making it the lightest foldable in the industry today. It is also vivo’s slimmest foldable yet, measuring only 0.92 cm in its folded state and 0.43 cm in its unfolded state. A completely reworked hinge structure makes this possible. The new rotating-sliding kinematic structure hinge uses FS55 ultra-high-strength steel and carbon fiber-reinforced nuts to reduce mass while improving reliability.

The upgraded rotating-sliding design also reduces pressure on the display, which helps to minimize creasing and improves hinge durability over time. This means that crease will be almost non-existent and it will stay so even after thousands of folds. It has been certified to endure over 600,000 folds.

This hardware is further supported by industry-leading protection. The X Fold5 is IPX8 rated for water immersion, IPX9 rated for high-pressure water spray, and IP5X rated for dust resistance. The triple-layer display protection and new cooling system help the device perform reliably in more extreme environments, whether indoors or outdoors.

Brighter, Sharper, More Color-Accurate Displays

The inner and cover screens are expected to be the brightest ever on a vivo foldable, both cover and main displays reaching up to 4,500 nits local peak brightness. The inner display will measure 8.03 inches, with a resolution of 2480 × 2200, using an advanced LTPO 8T backplane for adaptive 120 Hz refresh rate and smooth transitions.

The cover display will be 6.53 inches at 2748 × 1172 resolution, offering 457 PPI sharpness and a 120 Hz LTPO refresh rate as well. Both panels will bring support for ultra-high frequency PWM dimming (1920 Hz inside, 2160 Hz outside), making them more comfortable for the eyes, even during extended use. Basically, you are getting the best screens on a foldable, both on the inside and outside.

Bigger Battery, Faster Charging, Better Chemistry

With a 6,000 mAh battery, the X Fold5 now holds the title for the largest battery ever in a foldable phone. This means you can easily get a full day of use without having to reach for a charger. Whether you’re using the inner screen or the outer one, the vivo X Fold5 has got your back for a full day of use.

And when you do eventually need to power it back up, it doesn’t take much time, thanks to the 80W fast wired charging and 40W wireless charging, which can charge your device in no time. vivo achieved this increase without adding bulk (in fact, they reduced it), by using a second-generation semi-solid battery structure.

The new battery uses an advanced silicon-anode design that prevents swelling and improves ion exchange during charging cycles. It also retains power more effectively in extreme cold conditions, performing reliably even at -20°C. Now, that’s impressive.

A Professional Camera System Tuned With ZEISS

The X Fold5 introduces a flagship-grade triple camera setup that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in a foldable. At the center is a 50 MP VCS True Color main camera built on the IMX921 sensor with a large 1/1.56-inch sensor size, wide f/1.57 aperture, and industry-certified CIPA 4.5-level optical image stabilization.

The 50 MP ultra-wide lens uses the JN1 sensor and offers a 120° field of view. It supports autofocus and captures landscapes, architecture, and group portraits with minimal distortion, even at the edges.

The most significant upgrade comes in the telephoto system. The X Fold5 features a 50 MP IMX882 sensor with a 70 mm equivalent focal length and 3X optical zoom. It supports up to 100X HyperZoom using AIGC-based enhancement.

Additional features like ZEISS Multifocal Portrait at multiple focal lengths from 23mm to 100mm, Telephoto Stage Mode, Telephoto Nightscape, Dual Preview, and Classic Negative Style allow for professional-grade photography across varied scenarios.

The camera app includes a Super Landscape Mode, which combines AI-based tonal mapping with long-exposure HDR algorithms, letting you capture dramatic skylines, urban nightscapes, and time-lapse scenes with minimal setup.

All in all, the vivo X Fold5 features an incredible camera setup for both casual and professional users. You can capture every moment and detail in ultimate quality, thanks to the great combination of hardware and software tuning, plus ZEISS imaging with the T* coating.

Productivity without limits – Even in tougher conditions

The vivo X Fold5 isn’t just built to give you flaunting rights, it is designed and built to power through wherever work takes you. The X Fold5 comes with enterprise-grade productivity features as Smart Office Origin Workbench. It’s an AI-powered tool that helps users organize and switch between apps, keeping the focus on the current task. It allows users to arrange multiple app windows, group them for specific tasks, and easily switch between them.

To further streamline your workflow, vivo has added a dedicated Shortcut Button on the device. This physical control gives you instant access to frequently used tools like Notes, Flashlight, Recorder, and Camera — all with a single press. It’s a subtle but powerful improvement that saves you time and reduces friction in day-to-day use

The X Fold5 also integrates Gemini Assistant by Google, which adds a layer of contextual intelligence to your tasks.

When it comes to creativity and content generation, the X Fold5 truly shines. Its large, immersive foldable display acts like a digital canvas, enhanced by vivo’s AI Imaging Suite. This suite includes tools like:

  • AI Magic Move, which lets you reposition elements within an image
  • AI Erase and Reflection Remover, which can clean up backgrounds, glare, or distractions;
  • AI Image Expander, which intelligently fills out image borders for a wider, cinematic look;
  • And Photo Enhance, which automatically adjusts lighting, contrast, and color.

These features transform the phone into a mobile content studio — ideal for creators, marketers, and professionals who need polished visuals without diving into complex editing software.

But productivity doesn’t mean much if your phone can’t keep up with your lifestyle. That’s where the X Fold5’s unmatched durability comes in.

This is the first-ever foldable in the world with an IPX9+ rating, which means it can withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, something no other foldable dares to promise. Add that to the existing IPX8 water resistance (for immersion up to 1.5 meters) and IP5X dust resistance, and you’ve got a device built to survive real-world chaos.

And for the extreme adventurers out there? The X Fold5 stays operational even in freezing conditions as low as –20°C, making it the ideal foldable for both boardrooms and basecamps.

Together, these features turn the vivo X Fold5 into more than just a foldable phone. It’s a professional powerhouse, designed to empower creators, decision-makers, and anyone who refuses to compromise between portability, performance, and protection.
