Xiaomi Redmi 8 with Dual Cameras and 5000mAh battery launched at Rs. 7,999

Xiaomi Redmi 8 has launched in India as a sequel to the Redmi 7. Just the other day, the phone made its debut in Ukraine. The budget phone bags a Snapdragon 439 chipset, a 5000mAh battery with fast charging capability and multiple memory configurations. On the imaging front, it boasts a dual-camera setup bolstered by AI enhancements. Let’s deep dive into these features and more.

Redmi 8 highlights

Redmi 8 sports a V-shaped dot-notch up top and the bottom bezel now has a Redmi logo. This is a nuanced touch to differentiate it from a myriad of other phones with similar frontier. The display is a 6.22-inch HD+ panel (720×1520 pixels) with a 19:9 aspect ratio and 320ppi of pixel density. It comes with Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Pivot to the back to see the phone’s Aura Mirror design language. Redmi has gone with a gradient design language with a subtle shimmering effect. The phone comes out in Onyx Black, Ruby Red, and Sapphire Blue hues. Further, the phone comes in a plastic body which is P2i splash-resistant.

Redmi 8’s rear camera setup is arranged in a long vertical stack, which also houses the fingerprint scanner and distinct Redmi branding. There is even a ‘Designed by Xiaomi’ branding. The cameras include a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor (f/1.8) plus a 2-megapixel duo. The selfie comes from an 8-megapixel shooter, which could be used for Face Unlock as well. There is Google Lens support for 104 languages.

To the bottom, you get a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C socket, both of which is heartening to see. The solo speaker grill also sits alongside them.

Internally, the phone helms octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 SoC aided by 3/4GB RAM and 32/64GB storage. MIUI 10.0.1.3 based on Android Pie is slapped as the software. Redmi has massed a 5000mAh battery which is backed by 18W fast charging support (sold separately). However, inside the box, you get only a 10W charger.

Redmi 8 does bring wireless FM Radio and IR blaster, which are nice to have.

Redmi 8 launched in India

Redmi 8 3GB RAM+ 32GB storage variant starts in India at Rs. 7,999. The higher 4GB RAM + 64GB model is priced at Rs. 8,999. However, celebrating its 5th anniversary, the first 5 million units of the 4GB model will be available at Rs. 7,999.

It will be available from October 12 at 12 midnight via Flipkart and Mi online outlets.

Xiaomi also confirmed that the Redmi Note 8 Pro will launch on October 16th.
