Xiaomi’s first dual-mode 5G phone, the Redmi K30 5G, that recently became the first Snapdragon 765-powered phone to go official, has been tested to support 144Hz display refresh rate in Xiaomi labs, vice president Lu Weibing confirmed in a Weibo post.

Outside the lab, the 6.67-inch IPS LCD display on the Redmi K30 5G refreshes at 120Hz – which already makes it smoother, more fluid than conventional 60Hz or even 90Hz screens.

OnePlus just announced its 2K 120Hz display at its recently concluded ‘Screen Technology Event’ in China. Come to think of it, Xiaomi announcing this lab result feels like a maneuver to steal OnePlus’ thunder. Attaining 144Hz refresh is interesting, but that still doesn’t position Redmi K30 5G in the lead. The Shap Aquos Zero2 launched last year was the first to attain 240Hz.

Animations and scrolling on high refresh rate screens are more fluid and higher the refresh rate, the more discernible is the impact – In case you are wondering the merits of the rat race. Of course, high refresh rate screens also pose a gaming advantage, but most Android games still support only up to 120fps.

We suppose it would be possible for geeks smitten by high screen refresh rates to run their Redmi K30 5G screens at 144Hz, but they’ll have to risk muddling up display colors. If you’ve been keeping tabs, even the last generation K20 Pro could also be forced to refresh at a higher 75Hz.
