7 Popular Cars Going Electric: What’s Changing and When

The Indian car market has seen an increase in the uptake of EVs in recent years; among the most sought-after models include Tata Nexon EV and Tata Punch EV models. This trend is expected to persist, going forward, with a number of other new electric vehicle models planned for release in the future. Here’s a look at seven ICE-powered cars that will soon be available in electric versions:

1. Hyundai Creta

The new generation of Hyundai’s Creta nameplate which is quite famous in the Indian market will soon be available with an electric powertrain. It is planned that by March 2025 the manufacturing of the Creta EV will start, while the model itself could be already released by the end of 2024. They will include EV-specific design elements like aerodynamic wheels, a new grille, and bumpers designed for the trope. Inside the changes prepares a new three-spoke sports steering wheel, gear shift lever mounted on the steering column, dual-integrated 10. 25-inch screens, and other advanced options which distinguish them from competitors’ models. Standard safety features will comprise six airbags, Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), 360-degree camera, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). It is expected to have an integrity of over 400 km and would cost higher than its ICE version of which the existing model costs between Rs 10.99 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. 14 lakh (ex-showroom).

2. Mahindra XUV700

Mahindra plans to launch the New Age version of XUV700 as XUV.e8. Following the XUV700, it will have a similar layout but an overhauled face with connected LED lights and refreshed headlights’ casing. On the inside, it’ll have three screens, a two-piece flat bottomed steering with an illuminated logo, and a whole plethora of gadgetry. Described earlier, the XUV was initially intended to serve 60 and 80 kWh batteries. e8 is expected to go on sale in late 2024 to start at a targeted price of roughly Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom.

3. Tata Harrier

After electrifying the Nexon, Punch, Tigor, and Tiago, Tata Motors will introduce the Harrier EV by March 2025. The Harrier EV will have basic exterior design with an EV-specific aerodynamic design with new 5-spoke alloys and probably new front grille and bumpers. It will also come in a dual powerful motor configuration with all-wheel drive, and a single powertrain two-wheel drive variant. A new MULTI-LINK SUSPENSION system will replace the existing Torsion Beam Axle that is believed to improve the handling ability of the car. Harrier EV’s will be priced at around Rs 30 lakhs (ex-showroom).

4. Kia Carens

It is believed that the Kia Carens EV would follow after launch of the ICE-powered Carens facelift. It could emerge as the cheapest electric vehicle in India’s market segmentation providing features such as a 10.25-inch screen for infotainment, a wide panoramic sunroof, and advanced driver assistance systems. Standard and extended-range battery pack choices might be provided which would provide a range of over 400 km while the Carens will be slightly more expensive than the standard model.

5. Honda Elevate

Honda intends to unveil the electric version of the Elevate by the mid-term of 2026. Thus, the look of the Elevate EV will be similar to that of the standard car but with exclusive features required for an EV, say, specific wheels. It will include all the enhancements of the basic Elevate, namely a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charger, and advanced driver aid systems (ADAS). Estimating about 450 km of range, the Elevate EV will right up against Hyundai Creta EV.

6. Tata Altroz

The Tata Altroz is another model that will be produced in a racer version after being recently launched and can also be offered as an electric car. Expected to be launched before the Curvv EV before the end of 2024, it was confirmed that the Altroz EV will come with 10.25-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch driver display and other options. It is expected to employ the Nexon EV powertrain for the medium-range, which may have a range of approximately 325 km.

7. Kia Seltos

The Kia Seltos EV will be launched by 2025, and it will be incorporating certain design elements of an electric vehicle but other than that, almost everything about the car will be similar to the standard Seltos. It will deliver dual-integrated 10. standard items such as 25-inch screens, the panoramic roof, and additional advanced driving assist systems. Choice of battery packs could allow a range of up to 400 km for the car.

8. Special Mention: Tata Sierra EV

Tata Motors selected the Sierra moniker for the next electric vehicle that the manufacturer plans to release in 2025. It is based on Tata’s Sigma platform and will come in various configurations, and promise to become a major player in the market of electric SUVs.
