In today’s fast-moving world, parents’ escalating concerns about their teenagers’ safety when they are travelling alone have inspired Uber to launch ‘Uber for Teens’. This service has been rolled out for teenagers between 13 to 17 years of age to ensure a secure, safe & easy way of transportation for teens as well as their guardians. The service has been rolled out in 37 cities so far, including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, & others (full list at the end). The service was first launched in the US in 2023 and was later implemented in over 50 countries.

Uber For Teens: What is it?

Uber for Teens is a service introduced by Uber India can service for teenagers between 13 to 17 years. This service aims to address any kind of mobility challenges faced by teenagers and offers peace of mind to their guardians/parents when they are travelling alone.

How to Book ‘Uber For Teens’

1. To book an Uber Ride for Teens, Parents/Guardians with a verified Uber account will have to invite their teen to join Uber. To do so, follow these steps-

  • Open the Uber app and go to the ‘Family’ or ‘Teens’ section.
  • Choose ‘Add new member’ or ‘Invite teen’.
  • Enter the teen’s contact information.
  • As soon as you do so, the teen will get an invitation via SMS or email.

2. Next, the teen will be allowed to set up their account by following these steps-

  • Download the Uber app and create an account.
  • Accept the invitation from the parent/guardian.
  • Link their account to their parents’ account.
  • Once the account is set up, the teen can start booking rides using the app.
  • They will have to enter the pickup and destination locations and choose the desired ride type.

3. Parents will start receiving notifications and live tracking as soon as teens book a ride.

4. Parents can also ask for rides on behalf of their teens.

Special Features of Uber for Teens

  • The teen accounts come with parental oversight so parents can create accounts for their teens, monitor rides in real time, and receive ride summaries after trips for added peace of mind.
  • Trips booked by teen accounts are locked to a specific destination, ensuring drivers cannot modify the route.
  • Only the drivers with high ratings and thorough background checks are eligible for teen rides.
  • Options like Pin verification, Ride Check, and real-time tracking are always active and cannot be disabled at any point. Teens can also enable audio recording for enhanced security.
  • Teens can bring along riders aged 13 to 17 with parental or guardian permission. All riders have to sit in the back seat and wear seat belts throughout the trip.
  • Sensors and GPS data is used to detect if a ride goes off course, stops unexpectedly or ends early.
  • If teens choose Audio Recording, each of their trips will be automatically recorded unless they opt out by removing microphone permission for the app.
  • Parents have the flexibility to book rides on behalf of their teens when needed.
  • When teens turn 18, their accounts are converted into standard accounts with additional features. Parents can still track rides if teens remain part of the Family Profile.
