Recently, Instagram announced the launch of ‘Teen Accounts’ in India. Initially introduced in 2024 in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, this feature is now available in India. With Teen Accounts, users under the age of 16 will require parental or guardian consent to modify certain settings and access restricted features within the app.

How to Create an Instagram Teen Account

To make an Instagram teen account, one needs to be at least 13 years of age. One needs to create a regular Instagram account and fill in their correct age information to qualify it as a Teen Account.

  • Launch the Instagram application on your device. 
  • Select the option to ‘Create New Account’. 
  • Provide your mobile number or email address to initiate the account creation process. If you opt for an email address, be sure to enter the confirmation code sent to your inbox. 
  • Set your password and decide if you would like to save your login details. 
  • Input your accurate date of birth, including the day, month, and year. Instagram will display your age once you enter this information. Click on Next. 
  • Fill in your full name, choose a username, and agree to Instagram’s terms to proceed with your account setup. 
  • After logging into your account, navigate to your profile settings and look for the option to switch to a ‘Teen Account’. 
  • Submit a supervision request to your parent, who must approve it to access the monitoring features.

Since you have entered your correct DOB, you will automatically qualify for a Teen Account. Also, Instagram might need additional verification to confirm your age when setting up a Teen account. This has been done to ensure a more secure and age-appropriate experience.

Instagram Teen Account: Features

  • Teen accounts on Instagram restrict tagging and mentions to individuals that users follow.
  • Teen accounts are automatically set to private, requiring users to approve their followers, which prevents non-followers from engaging with their posts.
  • These accounts have a Sleep Mode activated from 10 PM to 7 AM, silencing notifications and direct messages during the night.
  • Messages can only be received from accounts that users follow or are connected with.
  • Instagram asserts that Teen Accounts are configured with the most stringent content settings by default.
  • Users of Teen accounts will receive a notification prompting them to log off after 60 minutes of usage each day.
  • Additionally, Instagram has implemented its anti-bullying feature, Hidden Words, among other tools for Teen accounts.
