Adobe introduced a significant update to Photoshop at its MAX 2025 conference today, integrating a conversational AI Assistant that allows users to perform image edits using natural language prompts. This new “Prompt to Edit” feature, powered by the enhanced Firefly Image Model 5, enables users to type commands like “remove the background” or “make the lighting softer,” letting the AI execute complex edits contextually.

This “agentic AI” approach aims to simplify workflows, allowing the Assistant to handle multi-step tasks and offer recommendations while users retain creative control. The underlying Firefly Image Model 5, now in public beta, promises improved photorealism, native 4MP generation, and better handling of complex scenes. Adobe also previewed Project Moonlight, a future cross-app AI assistant.

Further AI enhancements in Photoshop include integrating partner models (Google Gemini, Black Forest Labs, Topaz Labs) into Generative Fill and Generative Upscale for more options and high-resolution upscaling. A new Harmonize feature simplifies compositing by automatically matching light and colour.

Adobe also expanded its Firefly creative AI studio, introducing public betas for Generate Soundtrack (AI music creation) and Generate Speech (text-to-speech voiceovers using Firefly and ElevenLabs models). A timeline-based AI video editor and Firefly Custom Models (allowing creators to train AI on their own style) entered private beta.
