Coming September is going to be a busy month for Apple. On the one hand, the company will ship its new iPhones, Apple Watches, and other new hardware, while on the other, it will float the iOS 18 update with major changes in the user interface (along with a host of new features and abilities). While iOS 18 will improve the iPhone experience, it will change the way people use their AirPods by adding a host of new abilities, such as Head Gestures, Voice Isolation, and so on.

Nod Your Head To Accept/Reject A Phone Call While Wearing AirPods Pro

AirPods Pro head gestures

The biggest headliner of all the new features coming to AirPods Pro is head gestures. As shown at WWDC, the head gestures feature will allow users to say yes or no (as a response to a question by Siri) by nodding their heads. So nodding the head up and down would mean a yes while shaking the head left to right would mean a no. The feature could be very useful, especially when users don’t have their hands free and don’t want or don’t want to disturb the people around them.

Currently, the AirPods Pro allows users to answer/reject incoming calls or end announcements by saying yes or no. The Head Gestures feature seems to be an extension of this, allowing users to manage calls, messages, and notifications just by shaking their head. It is important to mention that this Siri Interactions feature will require an H2 chip, which is only present in the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation).

AirPods Pro Get Their Own Version Of Voice Isolation

iPhone voice isolation

The upcoming iOS 18 update will also fix one of the most prevalent AirPods Pro issues – poor call quality. With the new software update, AirPods Pro users will get Voice Isolation. The microphone mode currently exists for on-device calls on iPhones. It uses machine learning to cut down background noise so that the person on the other end of the call hears nothing but the user’s voice. The software update will give AirPods Pro its own Voice Isolation.

With the H2 chip and the microphones on the device, the AirPods Pro will be able to separate the user’s voice from the background noises, such as the traffic, and eliminate everything but the user’s voice. It’s worth mentioning that Voice Isolation doesn’t do a very good job on the iPhone. Sometimes, if the user isn’t holding the phone close to their face, the feature isn’t able to differentiate between their voice and the background sounds; it often cancels the user’s voice. Nonetheless, we’re expecting better from the AirPods.

New Personalized Spatial Audio For Games And Hearing Aid Mode

Personalized Spatial Audio

Apple is also adding Personalized Spatial Audio to AirPods 3, AirPods Pro (both generations), and the AirPods Max. As and when developers incorporate the feature in their titles, users will be able to play video games with an immersive audio experience on their AirPods, especially with dynamic head tracking. Speaking of gaming, Apple is also improving the latency on the AirPods Pro 2. More details about it should surface in the coming days.

Other features coming to AirPods Pro include a customizable Adaptive Audio experience. Last but not least, the wireless earbuds could also have a hearing aid mode, allowing people with hearing disabilities to use the device to amplify sounds.
