DarkWebInformer, a Twitter account known for sharing information about breaches, darknet markets, and ransomware, has posted a concerning update on X (formerly Twitter). They claim that a hacker named xenZen is selling data belonging to 375 million Airtel India customers. The data breach reportedly occurred in June 2024, meaning the data has been updated up to that month.

According to the post, the leaked data includes mobile numbers, names, dates of birth, father’s names, local and permanent addresses, alternate numbers, email IDs, genders, nationalities, connection types, SIM activation dates, Aadhaar numbers, and details of photo IDs and address proofs.

xenZen is allegedly selling all of this dataset for $50,000 USD (INR 41.75 Lacs) in XMR (Monero). All of this data is not sensitive information per se but still an alarming news.

What’s the response from Airtel? Well, Airtel India has denied these allegations, asserting to users that there has been no data breach. This could either mean that Airtel is indeed telling the truth or that there has been a data breach and Airtel doesn’t want to reveal it.

What should you do if your data has been breached?

Visit haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email address to check if your data has been compromised. If your data has been breached, immediately change your passwords and set up two-factor authentication (2FA). Also, monitor your bank accounts and social media accounts for any suspicious activity.

This isn’t the first time xenZen has been involved in a high-profile breach. Earlier, the hacker allegedly obtained data from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, which included 200,000 records from the eMigrate portal, though this claim was also denied.
