Earlier in November, we got to know that all four iPhone 16 models will be powered by A18 chipset thanks to the courtesy of Haitong Securities’s Jeff Pu. It could be an A18 chipset for non-Pro models and an A18 Pro for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max as usual. However, it seems like there’s an ongoing debate when it comes to the choice of chipsets given the latest rumor indicating all four models will use the same chipset aka the A18.
iPhone 16 models might use the same chipset
According to an internal code listed on the initial version of iOS 18 codenamed as Crystal, the iPhone 16 series is identified by the following codes –
- iPhone 16 – D47
- iPhone 16 Plus – D48
- iPhone 16 Pro – D93
- iPhone 16 Pro Max – D94
What got us intrigued is the report that all four iPhone 16 models are likely using the same SoC codenamed t8140- Tahiti. It appears to be a codename for the Apple A18 chipset that we were hoping would debut with the iPhone 16 series.
However, it seems like all four iPhone 16 models will be powered by the same chip – A18 SoC. It practically skews Apple’s recent approach using hand-me-down chipsets on non-Pro models while only the Pro models get the latest chipset. For instance, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 chipset; the iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max uses the A17 Pro chipset made on TSMC’s 3nm process. There’s a possibility the Cupertino-based giant could change its approach and return to what it was pre-iPhone 14 era.
iPhone 16 models could still see A18 and A18 Pro chipsets
Note that we aren’t denying any speculations on A18 and A18 Pro chipsets. We could see the same chipset (at least the same gen) on iPhone 16 models where the non-Pro models could get A18 while the Pro models got A18 Pro.
Here, both the chipsets are expected to be built on TSMC’s 2nd-gen N3E node promising better power efficiency and performance. The A18 Pro AP could feature an overclocked CPU or GPU to deliver better performance than the A18.
Apple iPhone 16 Series Launch Date
It is a no-brainer. Apple usually launches newer iPhones in September/October each year. The iPhone 16 series won’t be any different. Although the dates aren’t out (possibly because we are 10 months away from the launch), we hope to hear more about the iPhone 16 series in the coming weeks.
