Just days after rolling out iOS 18.4, Apple has surprised developers with the first beta of iOS 18.5. This unexpected update brings a mix of user interface refinements, notably within the Mail app, and a new AppleCare management section directly in settings. Plus, it addresses some critical bugs, including a black screen issue with the Vision Pro app.

Apple is continuing its rapid iteration of iOS with the immediate release of iOS 18.5 developer beta 1. This update, available to those enrolled in Apple’s developer program, focuses on streamlining user experience and fixing recently surfaced bugs.

Mail App Enhancements

  • The Mail app’s three-dot menu now offers quick toggles for “Contact Photos” and “Group by Sender.” This allows users to customize their inbox view directly within the app, eliminating the need to navigate to the Settings app.
  • Rationale: This improves user accessibility and efficiency, aligning with Apple’s focus on intuitive design.

AppleCare Management

  • This centralizes AppleCare management, simplifying the process for users to maintain their device protection.

Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

  • A significant bug causing a black screen when launching the Vision Pro app has been resolved. This issue arose following the introduction of the Vision Pro app in iOS 18.4, which allows users to browse and download content for Apple’s new mixed-reality headset.
  • Addressing this critical bug ensures a smoother user experience for Vision Pro owners.
  • Apple has also implemented a fix for issues related to the AI-powered Writing Tools, part of Apple Intelligence.
  • General performance improvements and minor bug fixes are also included, aimed at enhancing overall stability and responsiveness.
  • Standard bug fixes and performance improvements are crucial for a stable and efficient operating system.
