TL; DR
  • Apple has been evaluating Google’s AI technology for a long time, and now the companies are finalizing an agreement.
  • In the past, Apple was reported to be testing OpenAI’s ChatGPT (which is already integrated into Siri to a limited extent), Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini.
  • The AI-infused version of Siri is expected to roll out this spring, around March 2026. Per the report, Apple has scheduled the release of iOS 26.4, corroborating the expected launch in March.

Remember Apple’s promise to equip Siri with conversational AI? As it turns out, that could happen sometime soon, but not without Google. You read that right. According to a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly signing a deal with Google for an “ultrapowerful 1.2 trillion parameter artificial intelligence model” that will help supercharge the Siri voice assistant.

Apple’s $1 Billion Bet on Google’s Gemini

Apple has been evaluating Google’s AI technology for a long time, and now the companies are finalizing an agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Apple will reportedly pay Google about $1 billion a year for using its technology, unlocking a slew of new features next year.

Once all systems are in place, Google’s Gemini will handle the back-end processing for Siri’s summarizer and planner, the essential components of an LLM that break down the information provided by the user and create a plan of action to execute relevant tasks.

However, Apple won’t abandon its own language model entirely, as some Siri functions (probably the ones that require less processing power) will use the company’s models.

A Temporary Alliance with a Rival

In the past, Apple was reported to be testing OpenAI’s ChatGPT (which is already integrated into Siri to a limited extent), Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini. However, the Cupertino giant chose Google’s Gemini as a third-party model of choice to revamp Siri. If everything goes well, iPhone users should get to experience the revamped Siri next year.

The report explicitly states that this arrangement is a temporary solution until Apple develops an in-house language model with a trillion parameters and provides cloud-based responses to users’ queries (which might be as early as next year).

Currently, Google’s 1.2 trillion-parameter model is leaps and bounds ahead of Apple’s in-house 150 billion-parameter model, and Apple needs to buy some time (rather expensive time) to catch up.

When Will the New Siri Arrive

iPhone 17 Review

The AI-infused version of Siri is expected to roll out this spring, around March 2026. Per the report, Apple has scheduled the release of iOS 26.4, corroborating the expected launch in March.

The hope is that Apple will eventually replace Google’s AI model with its own, as and when it becomes powerful enough. However, that could be a bit tricky with AI talent leaving the company to join other AI-first organizations.
