Vision Pro is Apple’s most ambitious project so far. The mixed-reality headset features some of the most sophisticated camera and sensor systems, including a dual-chip design specially designed for the device. And although the headset is yet to go on sale, which it should in early 2024, the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on its successor.

Apple Vision Pro To Get Lighter

In his weekly newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman writes that Apple is working to lower Visio Pro’s weight and size. In its testing, the company discovered that the premium materials on Vision Pro, like the metal chassis and the glass front, weigh so much that the device leads to neck strains. Hence, the company is working to make the headset smaller and more comfortable to wear.

The device currently weighs a pound, which could be too heavy for certain users, especially those with some neck condition. At present, Apple is considering addressing the issue with an over-the-head strap, but making the device lighter would be a better “long-term solution.” Gurman also mentions that Vision Pro’s hardware “has been ready to go for months,” but the software and operations team are still finishing up on the device for its debut.

The Company Is Also Considering Factor-Fitted Prescription Lenses

Making the headset simpler for those who wear prescription glasses is yet another challenge. With the first generation Vision Pro, the company didn’t work on in-built lenses. Instead, it partnered with Zeiss to make lenses that magnetically latch themselves to the device. However, as a result, the operations team finds managing so many combinations tedious. Hence, the company might switch to pre-installed prescription lenses. But that has its problems, as it would make reselling the headset an issue. Further, users’ vision might change with time.

Nonetheless, this indicates that the company is taking the technology seriously and hasn’t dropped the idea yet. It is considering making multiple versions of the Vision Pro headset, including a low-end and a more powerful model. More details about the developments should surface shortly. For those catching up, the original Vision Pro should be available in the United States early next year at a starting price of $3,499.
