Apple is significantly deepening its footprint in the Indian market, this time moving beyond the smartphone screen and into the driver’s seat. In a major milestone for the region’s automotive landscape, Apple may soon bring “Car Key” support to select Tata Motors Cars, allowing owners to leave their physical fobs behind.

Digital Convenience Meets Indian Roads
The integration allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to add a digital car key directly to the Apple Wallet app. Once configured, drivers can lock, unlock, and start their vehicles simply by holding their device near the car’s door handle or an internal NFC reader.
This partnership marks the official entry of Apple’s digital automotive keys into India. By teaming up with Tata Motors, Apple will esseantially be bringing this feature to Tata’s electric vehicles and premium SUVs.
How the Tech Works
The Car Key feature primarily utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. On higher-end Tata models, the system is expected to leverage Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. This allows for “passive entry,” meaning the car will automatically unlock as the driver approaches without them even needing to take their iPhone out of their pocket or bag.

Security remains the backbone of the feature. Digital keys are stored in the device’s Secure Element, and users can require FaceID or TouchID for every use. Furthermore, owners can “send” digital keys to friends or family via iMessage, with the ability to set restrictions on driving speed or stereo volume.
Availability and Future Outlook
While the full list of compatible vehicles is still being finalized, industry insiders suggest that Tata’s flagship EV lineup and premium SUVs, such as the Safari and Harrier, will be the first to receive the update.
This move signals a broader shift in the Indian automotive sector, as global tech giants and local manufacturers collaborate to redefine the modern driving experience.
