TL; DR
- Center Stage is the collective term for the camera system and the software-based mechanism that ensures you’re always in the frame.
- It crops and pans automatically, making it feel as if the camera is physically following you, but in reality, it is just a clever implementation of versatile hardware with intuitive software.
- The front-facing camera on the iPhone 17 features an 18MP sensor. However, unlike regular camera sensors, this is square in shape and has a wider field of view.
- As excellent as the Center Stage camera on the iPhone 17 is, like every other feature, it has certain downsides. First, we’re not sure which apps the new camera system will support out of the box.
If you’re getting one of the iPhone 17 models, you won’t have to worry about accommodating your entire friend group or office team in a selfie or adjusting your phone for the optimal view during video calls anymore: Center Stage will take care of everything.
But exactly what it is, and how does the nifty little feature work? In this article, we’ll explain what Center Stage is, how it changes the iPhone selfie experience, and why it matters for day-to-day users. So, without wasting another second, let’s get started.

What is Center Stage On The iPhone 17?

If you’ve heard the term Center Stage before, that’s because Apple has provided the feature on iPads for years, and, most recently, on MacBooks. Essentially, Center Stage is the collective term for the camera system and the software-based mechanism that ensures you’re always in the frame, regardless of whether you move around, are positioned on the far right side of the camera’s field of view, or are moving during a video call.
In other words, it crops and pans automatically, making it feel as if the camera is physically following you, but in reality, it is just a clever implementation of versatile hardware with intuitive software. Every model in the iPhone 17 lineup, including the baseline iPhone 17, the iPhone Air, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max, gets the feature.

How Does Center Stage Work?

While the Center Stage camera system does follow you around on FaceTime video calls, Apple has also unlocked an entirely new selfie experience with it. The front-facing camera on the iPhone 17 features an 18MP sensor. However, unlike regular camera sensors, this is square in shape and has a wider field of view.
- So, when you’re capturing a selfie, the camera crops into the sensor’s portion occupied by you, letting you capture a well-framed selfie.
- However, at the tap of a button, you can access the entire field of view, which increases the extent of the background in the selfie.
- Suppose you’re holding the iPhone 17 in portrait orientation, and two of your friends come along to take a picture with you. In that case, the Center Stage camera system will automatically expand the field of view and rotate from portrait to landscape to include everyone in the frame.

Why Does The New Feature Matter?

Essentially, the Center Stage camera enables you to capture selfies and group pictures in multiple aspect ratios without needing to adjust them manually in the settings. The feature can capture photos in 4:3 vertical, 4:3 horizontal, 16:9 horizontal, or even 1:1 square format. While the camera app can capture the shot on its own, you can also take manual control with an on-screen button and achieve the desired result.
In simpler words, you’ll no longer have to make awkward adjustments to your iPhone while capturing selfies, attending video calls, or even creating content, all of which are quality-of-life improvements for anyone using the iPhone 17. Whether it’s remote work, a family FaceTime call, or vlogging from the front camera, the feature should enhance various aspects of users’ day-to-day lives.
I’m sure that Android manufacturers will borrow this feature, add a couple of innovative touches, and launch it with their 2026 flagships, which are expected to arrive in late 2025.
Are There Any Limitations To The Center Stage Camera?

As excellent as the Center Stage camera on the iPhone 17 is, like every other feature, it has certain downsides. First, we’re not sure which apps the new camera system will support out of the box. Apple mentions that the feature works “during calls over FaceTime or third-party apps,” but we’re yet to find out the number of third-party apps that support this feature.
Another downside could be the loss of resolution due to cropping in on a specific portion of the 18MP camera sensor. So, at any given point, you’ll probably end up getting fewer details in the picture, unless you’re using the 1:1 aspect ratio, which utilizes the entire sensor. The difference shouldn’t be noticeable, and I’m excited to test the effective resolution once I get my hands on the device.
