Apple might be taking AirPods to a whole new level. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly exploring the idea of adding cameras to future AirPods. But before you imagine snapping photos from your earbuds, let’s clarify: these cameras are more likely to be IR (infrared) sensors, not traditional cameras.

What Are These IR Cameras For?

Apple Vision Pro available in the US on February 2 at $3,499

Gurman did not share any details on how the IR cameras would work, but we do have information from analyst Ming Chi-Kuo. According to his latest blog on the same, the IR cameras would primarily enhance the spatial audio experience, particularly when paired with the Vision Pro headset.

Here’s the idea: if you turn your head to look in a specific direction, the IR cameras could detect this movement and adjust the sound source accordingly. These IR sensors could also allow for hand-gesture-based interactions. How this would work is still under wraps.

Mass Production Timeline and Launch

AirPods 3

Mass production of these AirPods is expected to begin in 2026. If Apple follows its typical timeline, we could see them launching either in 2026 or potentially as early as 2027, depending on the development process.

This wouldn’t be the first time Apple has pushed AirPods beyond being “just earbuds.” Recent updates have added features like a built-in hearing test to monitor ear health. With IR cameras in the mix, AirPods could become a critical piece of Apple’s larger ecosystem.

The Vision Pro Tie-In

Apple’s Vision Pro, a $3,500 mixed-reality headset, was a bold statement of the company’s AR/VR ambitions. While the initial version is expensive and bulky, rumors suggest Apple might release a cheaper, more compact version in 2025 or 2026.

Beyond AirPods and Vision Pro, Apple is rumored to be working on its first foldable iPhone, which could launch in 2026 or 2027.
