A Future WhatsApp Update Could Include AR Call Effects And Filters

WhatsApp AR effects

According to WhatsApp updates tracker WABetaInfo, the platform is rolling out a new update through the Google Play Beta Program. The update brings the version up to 2.24.13.14, which contains the AR call effects and filters feature. Per the publication, the messaging app is exploring new augmented reality elements for video calls, enabling users to add fun and interactive elements to the call interface.

As and when the AR call effects and filters feature arrives for everyone, WhatsApp users will be able to personalize their video calls by adding dynamic facial filters and editing their backgrounds. While the former will help regular users by helping them smooth out their skin or add other elements to the call, the latter will allow users to attend professional video calls by removing any background distractions. The publication adds that the background editing feature will also be available on WhatsApp for desktop.

Users Will Also Be Able To Use Their Avatars On Video Calls

Apart from the useful features, WhatsApp is also working on several playful features for users, including the ability to replace themselves with their avatars. It’s good that WhatsApp is adding certain video call filters, as they are already present on other video calling apps. For instance, Google Meet already allows users to edit their backgrounds or change light modes for better visibility. Similarly, Apple’s FaceTime allows users to add several AR-based elements in video calls.

Given that the feature is currently under development, only certain testers have access to it. However, the publication is positive about AR call effects, and filters feature to be a part of a future app update. Most recently, WhatsApp was also seen working on a new interface for its call screen. The redesigned version aims to give the interface a modern look and improve the voice-calling experience on the app. However, the feature was spotted on WhatsApp’s beta version for Android.
