Car sales in the month of August took a slight hit as compared to July. People in August bought less cars as compared to the previous month, but the sales numbers across brands and segments saw a slight dip. In August, a total of 3,27,719 units were sold in the country, out of which some brands and cars came out to be the winners, while some were big losers.
Last month, in August, Maruti Suzuki led the numbers in terms of sheer volume of cars sold, grabbing a market share of more than 40 percent. After Maruti, Hyundai was the second-most popular brand, grabbing a market share of 13.43 percent, and then came Tata Motors with a market share of 12.51. Mahindra was the fourth-largest brand, gaining a market share of 12.02 percent.
So with that out of the way, let us take a look at the top 5 winners and top 3 losers in the Indian market based on sales data from last month.
Top 5 Winners
Maruti Suzuki Continues To Dominate Market
As a brand, Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the Indian market. With eight out of the top 10 selling cars in the country, Maruti Suzuki established its dominance in the market. Not only this, Maruti Suzuki holds a 40 percent market share in the country, which is more than the next three combined – 13.43 percent of Hyundai, 12.51 percent of Tata, and 12.02 percent of Mahindra.

In total, Maruti Suzuki sold 1,31,278 cars last month, which is much higher than any other brand in the country. Some of the top-selling cars for Maruti were the Ertiga, Dzire, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
Ertiga Is The Highest Selling Car in India

Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga, which is a rather unusual car to sit on top, sold 18,445 units in August, making it the top-selling car in the country. This is an 11.1 percent growth as compared to last month (July 2025), and a 0.7 percent drop as compared to last year (August 2024).
Renault Kiger Makes An Important Comeback
The Renault Kiger saw the biggest jump in month-on-month sales. The French manufacturer’s sub 4-meter compact SUV recently saw an update, bringing some much important updates to the Kiger. Last month, Renault sold 910 units of the Kiger, which is a massive jump of more than 181 percent! The previous month (July 2025), Renault was able to sell only 323 units of the Kiger.

The updated Renault Kiger brought some much-needed features and drivetrain improvements to the car. It was launched with a 1.0 litre petrol engine which had both turbocharged and naturally aspirated options available. We also get to see a manual, an AMT, and a CVT transmission paired with the 1-litre powertrain. In terms of features, we got front ventilated seats, a new infotainment system, leatherette upholstery, drive modes, TPMS, and more.
Indian Brands Shine
Like Maruti Suzuki was the leader in terms of the amount of cars sold, Indian brands overall are being trusted a lot by the car buyers. Out of the top 4 brands in terms of the market share, three are local Indian brands – Maruti Suzuki, Tata, and Mahindra. Which means that practically around 65% of the market has been captured by homegrown brands.
Out of the top four brands, Maruti Suzuki is the first with a 40% market share, Tata comes third with a 12.52 percent market share, and Mahindra and Mahindra comes fourth with a 12.02 percent market share as shown by the sales data of last month.
SUVs Are The Obvious Favourite
Out of the more than 3.27 lakh cars sold in the month of August 2025, 49 percent of them were SUVs. This means that the biggest winner of August in the automotive markets have been SUVs. Half of all the cars that are being sold in India are SUVs, which is a marvelous feat. No wonder brands want to market even tiny cars like the Maruti Espresso as an “SUV.” Because it sells.
Top 3 Losers
Toyota Rumion
Toyota Rumion saw the sharpest decline in terms of the volume of units sold last month. A car that sold 576 units the previous month (July 2025), only sold 68 units in August, which is an 88.19 percent month-on-month drop.
Now the reason for this could very well be the presence of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the trust that product has created in the market. Even the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga’s sales numbers support this argument.
Kia Syros
Kia’s latest sub 4 meter car, the Syros is great value for money. However, the sales saw a massive drop in August. As compared to the previous month, the Kia Syros sales have dropped by 63 percent. Last month, in July 2025, Kia sold about 834 Syros units. In August, the brand was able to sell only 308 cars.

The reason for this can’t be pin pointed, but it could be mainly because of how the car looks, where many are calling it a “premium WagonR.” However, the Kia Syros is one of the most functional cars in the market.
MG ZS EV
The MG ZS EV sales also saw a sharp decline. This month (August 2025), the MG ZS EV only witnessed a sale of 380 units, which is a 53.37 drop from last month, when MG reported 815 units sold.
Conclusion
So those were the numbers for the month of August. Maruti Suzuki’s dominance remains unmatched, but it is good to see people placing more and more of their trust in Indian brands, making it even more important for the likes of Tata and Mahindra to focus more on their customer service experience.
One observation here is that the commercial usage really drives sales. Three out of the top 5 selling cars in the country are also the most popular cabs – WagonR, Dzire and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which means that a major chunk of these sales must have come due to the commercial requirement.
