TL; DR
  • The Dimensity 6400 features two Arm Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.5GHz, and six Arm Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz.
  • Other specifications, like support for 2520 x 1080 maximum display resolution, up to 120Hz of refresh rate, and support for a 108MP native camera, remain the same on the Dimensity 6400 and the Dimensity 6300.

The Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has released the Dimensity 6400 SoC for entry-level smartphones, taking after the Dimensity 6300 SoC from last year. It is based on TSMC’s 6nm fabrication technology, providing a balance between efficiency and the chip’s cost for OEMs. Although manufacturers will use the chipset in their 2025 smartphones, it only improves upon the processing capacity by a bit.

MediaTek Dimensity 6400 vs. Dimensity 6300: Tech Specs, Compared

The Dimensity 6400 features two Arm Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.5GHz, and six Arm Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. In comparison, last year’s Dimensity 6300 SoC featured the same performance and efficient cores, except the former were clocked at 2.4GHz. In other words, the new processor only provides a 0.1GHz clock speed boost over its predecessor.

This reminds me of when Qualcomm released the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 SoC, a rebranded version of the three-year-old (now four-year-old) Snapdragon 695 chip. In fact, if you trace the roots of the cluster design on the Dimensity 6400, you’ll find that it is similar to a MediaTek chip from 2021 called the Dimensity 810 (it had a fairly less capable CPU, GPU, and modem, though).

The Dimensity 6400 and the Dimensity 6300 have the following similarities.

  • They’re based on TSMC’s 6nm fabrication technology
  • They share the CPU cluster design
  • Mali-G57 MC2 graphics processor
  • Support for LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 2,133 MHz
  • Support for UFS 2.2 storage
  • Support for 5G (with a peak download speed of 3.3 Gbps, Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth v5.2) with a 3Gpp Release-16 modem

Other specifications, like support for 2520 x 1080 maximum display resolution, up to 120Hz of refresh rate, and support for a 108MP native camera, remain the same on the Dimensity 6400 and the Dimensity 6300.
