The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has confirmed the launch of the Oppo F27 Pro+ in India. While the launch is scheduled for June 13, 2024, the brand has revealed some interesting details about the phone. The Oppo F27 Pro+ will be the first smartphone to feature three IP ratings.
What Are IP Ratings Anyway?

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings are codes that signify how well protected an electronic enclosure (such as a smartphone) can withstand the ingress of minute particles like dust or liquids. The International Electrotechnical Commission issues these ratings, and they have become a standard that the entire electronics industry follows.
You might have seen smartphone brands advertise their device’s IP ratings, like “IP68” or “IP65.” While the first two letters stand for Ingress Protection, the first number (ranging between zero to six) indicates the device’s resistance toward ingress of dirt, dust, or other solid objects. The second number, which ranges from zero to nine, signifies how well a device can withstand the ingress of liquids.
Most brands, whether they’re making a Bluetooth speaker, a smartwatch, or a smartphone, tend to go for official IP certifications. And that is because having an IP rating is a sure-shot mark of durability. It tells the consumer that the brand is serious about the product. Further, it also assures that it will survive any accidental drops in water.
What Is The Industry Standard For IP Ratings?

For the last few years, smartphone giants like Apple, Samsung, and Google seem to have stuck with the IP68 dust and water resistance rating for their flagship smartphones. For instance, the latest iPhone 15 models carry the IP68 rating, and so do the Galaxy S24 models. Even the Pixel 8 series ships with IP68 dust and water resistance ratings. While the exact time a smartphone could be submerged before being damaged could differ, they still have the same IP rating.

The Oppo F27 Pro+ Will Officially Feature Three IP Ratings
The company believes that the Indian market needs a water-resistant smartphone for the upcoming monsoon season, so it has officially announced the Oppo F27 Pro+, a handset with not one, not two, but three IP ratings. Further, the phone also meets the military-grade durability standard (more on that later). First, let’s discuss the official IP ratings.
For the first time, a brand’s gone for three IP ratings for a smartphone. The Oppo F27 Pro+ carries three Ingress Protection ratings: IP66, IP68, and IP69.
- IP66: This is the highest level of protection against dust and regular water jets, implying that the phone is completely sealed from dust and low-pressure water jets, like a shower or rain.
- IP68: While maintaining the highest protection against dust, this rating also signifies protection against water immersion for up to 1.5 meters (for a duration of 30 minutes).
- IP69: This is the highest dust and water resistance rating for an electronic device. It indicates that the device can withstand high-pressure and high-temperature water jets. This particular rating is often given to devices with an industrial use case.

Do IP Ratings Work Like That?

As far as we understand, IP ratings function as a hierarchy, implying that a phone with the higher IP ratings will also fulfill the conditions to be met for securing a lower IP rating. Keeping that in mind, an IP69 dust- and water-resistant phone will also have the resistance of one rated IP68 or IP66.
Speaking with regards to the Oppo F27 Pro+, shipping with the highest level of ingress protection (an IP69 rating) automatically implies that the phone can survive immersion and low-pressure water jets. Hence, saying that the phone ships with an IP69 rating makes more sense than saying that it features three IP ratings. Unless different parts of the phone feature a different IP rating, which we don’t know yet, having three different IP ratings doesn’t make sense.

Here Are A Few Other Durability Certifications That the Oppo F27 Pro+ Has

- Apart from the three IP ratings, the device also has a SWISS SGS Premium Performance 5 Stars Drop Resistance, which should protect the chassis and the screen against accidental drops.
- The Oppo F27 Pro+ also carries a MIL-STD-810H military-grade certification, which means it can survive high and low temperatures, vibrations, shock, humidity, and other harsh environmental conditions.
- Last but not least, it will also sport Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the company’s toughest protective glass. It will protect the phone’s screen from scratches that result from daily wear and tear.
Given that the company is trying to include as many durability ratings as possible, it signifies how much it wants to promote the phone as one that will stand the test of time. It even focuses on a leather back with a siloxane coating that is known for stain resistance.
The brand has shifted its focus toward physical durability, which seems to be an important aspect that affects users’ decisions. So, can you use the Oppo F27 Pro+ case-free? You might as well, given that the company has gone all-in on durability certifications.
