TL;DR

  • Tecno says that the dual-hinge mechanism can withstand a pressure of 2100MPa.
  • When unfolded, the device transforms into a massive tablet with a 10-inch 3K LTPO (4:3( foldable display.
  • The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2, with a tri-folding screen, maintains a thinner profile than the sixth-generation Galaxy Z Fold 6.

At IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung or International Consumer Electronics Fair) in Berlin, Tecno has showcased Phantom Ultimate 2, a concept phone with a tri-fold design. While several companies already sell dual-screen foldables, which feature a single-hinge mechanism that shuts or opens two halves of the screen, the Phantom Ultimate 2 features two hinges connecting three displays. When folded, the device has a shape similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 6; unfolding the device reveals a massive 10-inch inner screen.

Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 Features Two Hinges

Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 Features Two Hinges

First, let’s address the elephant in the room: the dual-hinge design. Tecno says that the mechanism can withstand a pressure of 2100MPa, which is a feat in itself, considering such high pressure is usually used in fields like engineering, such as hydraulic systems, or material testing. With the dual-hinge mechanism, the device can last for over 300,000 folds, which exceeds some of the current folding devices in the market. While there’s a lot going on underneath the screen, the hinge’s design results in minimal crease visibility.

The Devices Unfolds Into A 10-Inch Screen

When folded, the device measures 6.48 inches (diagonally). However, as soon as one unfolds the two foldable screens, the device transforms into a massive tablet with a 10-inch 3K LTPO (4:3) foldable display with a pixel density of 329 ppi. What’s unique about this screen is that it uses TDDI (Touch and Display Driver Integration) technology, wherein both the display driver and the touch sensor are integrated into one chip. This reduces the space occupied by two different components, resulting in improved performance and lower power consumption.

Phantom Ultimate 2 Is Thinner Than Several Foldables In The Market

Phantom Ultimate 2 Is Thinner Than Several Foldables In The Market.

Coming to the third and perhaps the most amazing aspect of the smartphone, it is just 11mm thick when folded. Even though it is a concept phone, the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2, with a tri-folding screen, maintains a thinner profile than the sixth-generation Galaxy Z Fold 6, which is 12.1mm thick when folded. The Tecno foldable is thinner than the OnePlus Open (11.7mm) and the Vivo X Fold3 Pro (11.2mm) as well. Only the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (10.5mm) is thinner than the Phantom Ultimate 2.

The tri-folding smartphone also features the thinnest battery cover, measuring just 0.35mm, courtesy of the Titan Advanced Fiber material. One can use the smartphone in multiple orientations, including a laptop mode. While the phone is a feat of engineering, Tecno hasn’t confirmed whether or when the Phantom Ultimate 2 will make it to the consumer market. Meanwhile, another Chinese manufacturer, Huawei, is gearing up to launch its tri-folding smartphone in its native market soon.
