The launch of the Nothing Phone 3a series is just around the corner but that hasn’t stopped the leaks from flowing. Just this week, we gave you a closer look at Nothing’s AI-based “Essential Space,” and now it’s time to examine the cameras.

Thanks to our partner Shivam, we have an exclusive, in-depth look at the new camera app that will debut on the Nothing Phone 3a Pro.

As a startup, Nothing relies heavily on community feedback for its products. This has led to significant changes in the camera systems for their 2025 product lineup.

For starters, the new camera app is similar to what you’d find on competing brands like OnePlus or Samsung. Swiping across the viewfinder allows you to switch between modes like Photo, Portrait, Video, and More. There are also device-specific modes. For example, the Phone 3a Pro offers a dedicated Macro mode (with up to 6x zoom) and a Night mode. Additional modes are found under the “More” sub-menu.

To simplify the user experience, Nothing has included a quick mode switcher, accessible by swiping up on the viewfinder within Photo mode. This quick launcher features five presets on the Phone 3a Pro: ‘Original,’ ‘Soft Focus’ (for 50mm portraits), ‘B&W Film’ (a black & white filter), ‘Wide Angle,’ ‘Lenticular,’ and ‘Close Up’ (for 140mm macro shots). You can also change the order of these presets and set a default preset.

Besides this, the phone features an ‘Expert mode’ and a ‘Night mode’ that works across all cameras. The main camera defaults to 12MP and offers the option of 6x zoom shots within Photo mode. This is in contrast to the 50MP mode, which limits optical magnification to 3x.

The app also integrates AI, with features like scene detection, document scanning, a QR code scanner, and more. Portrait mode allows you to capture shots at 24mm, 50mm, 70mm, and 100mm focal lengths.

Beyond these superficial changes, the camera app has gained some new functionalities under the hood. One of which is the TrueLens 3.0 Engine. Now this combines high-end hardware with AI to understand and enhance images. It uses AI tone mapping and scene detection to create true-to-life photos, expertly balancing highlights and shadows for superior tonal quality.

Nothing Phone 3a Series Camera Specifications

Both the Nothing Phone 3a and the Phone 3a Pro broadly share the same camera specs but differ in Telephoto and Selfie cameras. The Phone 3a gets a 50MP primary camera, with an 8MP ultra-wide angle camera and a 2x telephoto lens. The Phone 3a Pro in contrast gets a 50MP primary camera, with an 8MP ultra-wide angle camera and a 3x telephoto camera with OIS.

For selfies, the Nothing Phone 3a relies on a 32MP front camera, while the Phone 3a Pro gets a larger 50MP front-facing camera for those extra crisp selfies.
