Dr. Pan Xuebao, the director of the Samsung Semiconductor Research Institute in China has divulged some key details about the forthcoming Exynos 1080 chipset. Mind you, this is a follow up to Exynos 980, and not the current flagship Exynos 990. The latter’s successor is expected to be Exynos 2100 and will be powering the ensuing year’s top-end Galaxy S21.

With that out of the way, let’s now get into the things we now know of these two chips.

Exynos 1080 Specifics

Exynos 1080 will be Samsung’s first 5nm architecture based chipset. It will consist of Cortex A78 cores. We don’t know about the layout Samsung would go for. But what we know, at least from Arm’s claims is that the A78 can achieve 20% more performance than its precursor, ie A77 used in Exynos 980.

The graphics would be handled by Mali G78 GPU which has a two-gen advance over the Mali G77 used inside Exynos 980.

Vivo X60 is said to be the first phone to ship with the Exynos 1080 silicon.

Meanwhile, Exynos 2100 is the purported successor to Exynos 990 and likely what’ll engine the next year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra and other upstate models. Exynos 2100 is estimated to be using the Arm’s Cortex X1 core.

Cortex X1 was teased earlier this year alongside the A78 announcement. As per some leaks, it is 30% and 23% more powerful than the Cortex-A77 and A78 respectively.

Much of this is still awaits a stamp of credibility from Samsung. Hence, we would advise you to take them with a grain of salt.
