TL; DR

  • Xiaomi is all set to reveal their Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chipset powered phone in India next week.
  • Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 is Qualcomm’s entry point into under $100 5G smartphones.

Back in July, Qualcomm has shown their latest budget 5G chipset designed for developing markets: the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2. Marketed as a $99 solution, Xiaomi was announced as the first customer. Now, after much wait, Qualcomm and their partner are set to reveal the first smartphone powered by the 4s Gen 2 at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024 next week.

Qualcomm’s $99 5G phone bet

The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 isn’t a direct successor to last year’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, but rather a more affordable 5G option. Manufactured using a 4nm process, it’s aimed at budget-conscious consumers. Essentially an underclocked 4 Gen 2, the 4s Gen 2 features a similar core configuration: 2x Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 6x Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz.

To achieve the sub-$100 phone goal, Qualcomm opted for a 5G modem with a maximum download speed of 1Gbps, aiming to bring gigabit internet to a wider audience. We suspect that the first device to feature this chipset will be part of the Redmi 13 series. Interestingly, Xiaomi already offers the Redmi 13C 5G in the market for under Rs 10,000, powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 6100+ SoC—another $99 5G chip designed for developing markets.

Budget Redmi Smartphone

This upcoming Redmi phone could feature a 6.7-inch LCD panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and HD+ resolution. It may also sport a 50MP main camera, an 8MP selfie camera, a 5,000mAh battery, 18W charging, and Android 14 with MIUI, and be powered by the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2.

More details about this smartphone are expected to be revealed on October 16th at the Qualcomm booth at IMC 2024.
