Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 Series on 17th January which includes 3 smartphones- Samsung Galaxy S24, Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus, and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The series was announced globally with pre-orders beginning 17th January itself and deliveries starting 31st January. While Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus are mostly similar to their predecessors, Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with some noticeable updates. These include an added 50MP periscope lens, a new chipset, and a titanium frame for a durable build.

However, amidst all these key specs, two more things are important to be unpacked. While one of them improves the performance, the other one not so much. Let us talk about them one by one.

Exynos 2400-the first to use FOWLP Tech for Thermal Management

Samsung has used Exynos 2400 deca-core chipset for Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ in India. The brand claims that it is the first ever SoC to use a Fan-out Wafer Level Package (FOWLP) to offer better thermal management.

This FOWLP tech gives a larger space for I/O connections, thus allowing electric signals to move quickly and efficiently. Exynos has made heat management better by making packaging with lower heat resistance, in a small form factor so that the device using the chip stays cooler even when apps and games are run for long durations. This means aggressive gaming sessions will not heat your Galaxy devices now.

The tech offers an 8% improvement for multi-core and a whopping 23% improvement for single-core performance. It will provide a 40% smaller form factor and reduce thickness by 30% by removing the substrate.

Reports claim that the Plus model of the Galaxy S24 Series, which is powered by Exynos 2400 gives a better performance in 3D Mark Solar Bay Stress in comparison to Galaxy S24 Ultra which is powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. Also, the hexacore Samsung Xclipse 940 GPU powering the Exynos 2400 gives the highest score (4231) in the 3D Mark Wildlife extreme test which is on par with the Apple 17 Pro and two times better than the predecessor Exynos 2200.

Although GPU in Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has also seen a boost Exynos using their 4LPP+ and TSMC’s 4nm process also has the same power consumption for the GPU.

Apple-inspired AOD on Galaxy S24 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with an Apple-like Always-On-Display which comes enabled by default. Using this display, the screen will keep glowing with the wallpaper one has set even while the device is not being used. This is when the user does not enable AOD. As opposed to Galaxy S23 Ultra which used a black screen, One UI 6.1 is making Galaxy S24 Ultra use this AOD with muted colors and lock screen backdrop.

The settings menu offers a new toggle using which you can disable this AOD. You just have to disable the ‘Show Lock Screen Wallpaper’ toggle which will revert the display to a black screen like Galaxy S23 Ultra. It is quite surprising to see that Samsung has rolled out Galaxy S24 Ultra with this kind of display enabled. Earlier the company had no plans to offer a toggle to revert to black screen but since this new kind of AOD received a mixed response at the launch event, the brand was forced to offer a swap to the original black screen display instead of keeping wallpaper live.

However, not all things about this live wallpaper display are bad. There is a nice addition as well. If your wallpaper has a definitive subject like your partner, parent, or pet in it, you can toggle on the ability to erase the background automatically from the AOD. When you do this, not the entire screen will glow but the face of your subject.

Some find this glow wallpaper idea distracting during the day and night and for such users, going back to the black screen will be best. Samsung has tried to do something different with this kind of display but it cannot be everyone’s cup of tea. In case you want to try it yourself, pre-reserve your Galaxy S24 Series device and get it from 31st January. The Galaxy S24 Series has been made better than usual as the brand has rolled out a host of Galaxy AI features to make it future-ready.
