TL; DR
  • Android 17 Beta 4 code reveals “Pixel Glow,” a back-panel lighting system for calls and Gemini interactions.
  • The feature is expected on both Pixel phones and a rumored upcoming Pixel laptop.
  • Exact hardware placement on the Pixel 11 is unknown; leaked renders show no visible cutout yet.

The Android 17 Beta 4 just gave away two of Google’s big plans. An APK teardown by 9To5Google has uncovered code that points to a brand-new feature that we haven’t heard about before: Pixel Glow.

The name doesn’t really suggest anything, but as per the report, it is a hardware lighting system for the back panel of Pixel devices. But wait a minute, the existing Pixel devices don’t have an LED lighting strip or module at the back panel (unless the report is talking about Nothing devices, which it clearly isn’t).

What Exactly Is Pixel Glow And How Will It Work?

That’s something that the report addresses, though briefly, by stating that the feature is built for an upcoming Pixel device, not the existing ones. From what it sounds like, an upcoming smartphone from the company could come with a new lighting module at the back, either in the iconic camera bar or the ‘G’ logo.

The feature has the following description in the code: “Pixel Glow uses subtle light and color on the back of your device to inform you of important activity when it’s face down.” It could mean that the phone glows a color (or a certain color, if there’s RGB lighting involved), for notifications, incoming calls, messages, etc.

It also activates when you’re having conversations with Gemini AI, making the interaction feel more lively. Further, users should be able to customize the feature per their needs, making it glow for certain interactions.

Google Might Also Be Working On A New Laptop

The catch, however, is that the leaked renders of the Pixel 11 series (both the regular and the Pro variants), haven’t shown any visible cutout or new hardware elements at the back. As far as I can think, this could mean one of three things.

First, the renders are either inaccurate or incomplete. Second, the hardware could be hidden underneath an existing element, perhaps the edges of the camera bar. Third, and the saddest of them all, is that the Pixel Glow is being planned for a device in a future series.

The same report, citing the same codebase, reveals that the Pixel Glow also contains an “ic_laptop_light” icon. The feature’s settings also check whether the device running it is a desktop or not, strongly indicating that the company is working on a laptop too, and with the Pixel Glow feature no less.

For those who remember the original Chromebook Pixel, the laptop featured a light bar on its lid, and the Pixel Glow could materialize into something similar on an upcoming Google laptop.
