Electronic Vehicles, commonly known as EVs are becoming the trend nowadays as more and more people are opting for them. EVs are a more environmentally friendly mode of transport which also prove to be cost-effective in the long run. The use of EVs is still very limited as several factors are obstructing their usage, like the cost of the vehicles, lack of charging stations, and unavailability of drivers who drive EVs. The government of India has been making sincere efforts to increase the popularity of EVs among the masses and many other socially responsible conglomerates have also been helping out.

Recently, on the occasion of Earth Day (April 17), Google announced some new features for Google Maps related to EVs. These include finding the nearest EV charging stations nearby, planning trips with charging stations at important stops, and much more. This has been done so that EV owners feel more comfortable taking road trips.

Let us look at the features Google Maps has come up with-

  • Locating charging stations poses a big problem in unfamiliar or complex environments like multi-level parking structures. To resolve this problem, Google Maps has introduced AI-powered summaries that will be derived from user reviews to exactly pinpoint the location of charging stations. The summaries will not only show the location but also offer instructions to reach that location.
  • In-car navigation is also being improved for EV users. The in-car Google map will now show nearby charging stations directly. It will give real-time data about charging speeds, port availability, and more so that EV drivers can make an informed decision about whether they want to stop at a specific station or not. It will come in handy for all drivers with Google built-in vehicles.
  • Google Maps is making its existing feature better which will now recommend optimal charging locations for vehicles with Google built-in. It will be available on multi-stop journeys as well. If you are on a long trip and your battery is about to run out, Maps will analyze the car’s battery level and suggest charging stops along the way so that the battery doesn’t drain out. This ensures you have a worry-free trip. This update will have a global rollout soon.

  • Google Maps and Google Search now show more sustainable travel options including public transport and walking routes that will release fewer carbon emissions along with driving directions. This will be available in around 15 cities around the world including Montreal, Paris, Rome, Sydney, Barcelona, and Amsterdam.
