TL;DR

  • The feature removes all photos/videos on a user’s Google Photos backup without removing those from a user’s device.
  • To do so, users must open the Google Photos app, tap their profile picture at the top, and then select Google Photos settings.
  • Even though the photos and videos are removed from the cloud backup, they remain on the device’s storage.

The Google Photos app now has a new feature called ‘Undo Device Backup.’ As the name suggests, the feature helps users easily delete backed-up media files. As mentioned on the support page, the feature removes all photos/videos on a user’s Google Photos backup without removing those from a user’s device. In other words, the Undo Device Backup feature helps users free up their cloud storage.

How To Use Undo Device Backup On Google Photos?

To do so, users must open the Google Photos app, tap their profile picture at the top, and then select Google Photos settings. On the next screen, users must select Backup and scroll down to select “Undo backup for this device.” Next, users should check the box next to “I understand my photos and videos from this device will be deleted from Google Photos.” Finally, users should tap “Delete Google Photos backup.”

The Feature Leaves Local Copies Of The Media Files

Even though the photos and videos are removed from the cloud backup, they remain on the device’s storage. After the deletion of Google Photos backup, the automatic cloud backup feature will be turned off for the particular device. For the time being, this feature is rolling out for iOS users. However, it will soon be available to Android users.

In our opinion, the ‘Undo Device Backup’ feature could help users who’ve filled up the 15GB free storage provided with a Google account but wish to free up some space by emptying the portion occupied by photos and videos. However, it is important to mention that Google will remove the photos from its servers; they won’t be available to restore later.

In addition to the cloud backup, the photos will be removed from the Google Photos sections, including albums, search results, memories, and shared albums.
