The Google Pixel 9 series and the Pixel Fold 2 could feature a new and improved modem for better network reception and stability. In the past, we’ve heard about some connectivity-related issues on Pixel smartphones, particularly those that feature the Samsung Modem 5300. Google aims to address the problem with the new modem and provide users with a seamless experience. Here’s everything we know about the new modem and the Pixel devices it will power.

Samsung Modem 5400 To Improve Network Stability

According to an Android Authority report citing tipster Kamila Wojciechowska, Google Tensor G4 will feature a new Samsung Modem 5400. This modem should be more efficient and faster than the Samsung Modem 5300 on the Pixel 8 series from last year. The new modem will sport an upgraded software stack, offering better stability for a strong connection.

For those catching up, many users have complained about network stability on older Pixel smartphones, especially the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 7 series. The publication’s survey revealed that almost 60 percent of respondents reported network-related issues on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series.

The New Modem Will Also Bring Satellite Connectivity To Pixel Smartphones

While this should improve Pixel 9’s overall cellular reception, it will also add a new feature to the upcoming smartphone. With the Samsung Modem 5400, the Pixel 9 series will become the first Android smartphone to support satellite communication abilities, like the latest iPhones. To facilitate this feature internationally, Google will collaborate with T-Mobile and SpaceX.

Pixel Fold 2 And A 5G Android Tablet To Feature The Same Modem

Along with the flagship Pixel 9 series (which should include the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro), the purported Pixel Fold 2 will also feature the satellite communication feature, thanks to the Tensor G4 SoC. Further, Google is also said to be working on a new 5G tablet. The device is codenamed “clementine” and is expected to come with the same processor and modem.

How Will Satellite Connectivity Work On Pixel Smartphones?

With satellite connectivity on the Pixel 9 and Pixel Fold 2 (exclusive renders), users should be able to send and receive text messages. The smartphones could also come with a Satellite Gateway app that allows for easy communication with emergency services via an Emergency SoS feature similar to that on the iPhone.

Users might be presented with a couple of basic questions (with the option to choose from predefined answers) to understand the nature of the emergency before being connected to the rescue services. Further, they should also be able to notify their trusted contacts about the situation. Google has also designed certain animations to teach users how to hold their phones and point them toward the sky in a very specific alignment.
