Google is partnering with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to create smart glasses. Looking ahead, the company intends to collaborate with additional partners such as Kering Eyewear to broaden the selection of smart glasses available to consumers.

The capabilities of smart glasses have been discussed as well. These glasses will include a camera, microphones, and speakers, functioning in conjunction with a paired smartphone to provide hands-free access. Google asserts that the Android XR Glasses will be equipped to perceive the user’s environment through Gemini integration, enhancing contextual awareness for improved assistance. An optional in-lens display will provide relevant information precisely when needed.

During the I/O event, Google provided a glimpse of how applications will function on XR Glasses. The demonstration illustrated the practical use of Android XR Glasses in everyday scenarios such as messaging friends, scheduling appointments, requesting turn-by-turn navigation, taking photos, and more. Additionally, a live translation feature was showcased, enabling the glasses to display real-time subtitles for conversations between two individuals, effectively overcoming language barriers.

The organization announced its development of a cohesive software and reference hardware platform aimed at enabling the ecosystem to create smart glasses. Developers will gain access to this platform in 2025. Google has begun gathering insights from selected testers utilizing early prototypes, with additional updates on the progress expected in the upcoming months.

This is significant as it positions Google in direct rivalry with Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta and other smart glasses available in the market. Additionally, Apple is working on its own smart glasses, which are expected to be discussed at WWDC in June.
