TL; DR
- OpenAI’s GPT-5 offers exceptional coding prowess, excelling at complex front-end generation, debugging large codebases, and creating responsive websites with the help of simple, natural language and short prompts.
- GPT-5 is also better at handling multi-step, evolving tasks more efficiently, wherein the tool plans and coordinates between different tools seamlessly.
- Additional features include a larger context window of up to 256,000 tokens, has undergone extensive risk assessment for producing safe answers, and performs better with subjective domains.
Sam Altman-led OpenAI, on Thursday, announced the launch of GPT-5, its latest and most advanced large language model. It offers significant improvements over GPT-4, particularly in coding, reasoning, multimodal understanding, and accuracy of results. The company also states how the GPT-5 is another step toward the era of agentic AI, and, in the broader picture, toward artificial general intelligence.

What Is GPT-5?
It’s worth mentioning here that GPT-5 is a unified model that leverages the reasoning abilities of OpenAI’s o-series of language models, along with the GPT series’ ability to respond fast. Further, it can now determine when to invoke which model, instead of making the user (who might not be aware of each model’s specialties) make the decision.
Key Features Of GPT-5
Better At Coding

OpenAI’s GPT-5 offers exceptional coding prowess, excelling at complex front-end generation, debugging large codebases, and creating responsive websites with the help of simple, natural language and short prompts.
It also has a sense of design or aesthetics, and can manage spacing and typography with commands. On the SWE-bench Verified, GPT-5 scores 74.9%, which is higher than Claude Opus 4.1’s 74.5% and Gemini 2.5 Pro’s 59.6% (that’s a massive upgrade).
Can Handle Multi-Step Reasoning Tasks
GPT-5 is also better at handling multi-step, evolving tasks more efficiently, wherein the tool plans and coordinates between different tools seamlessly. However, on Humanity’s Last Exam, GPT-5 Pro scores 42%, which is noticeably less than xAI’s Grok 4 Heavy (which scored 44.4%).
OpenAI has also worked on the language model’s reasoning abilities, which can now process and interpret inputs from images, videos, spatial data, and scientific reasoning tasks, improving its data visualization capability. On the GPQA Diamond benchmark, GPT-5 Pro scores 89.4%, which is higher than Grok 5 Heavy’s 88.9% score.

Gives Better Health-Related Advice

The company has highlighted how more people are using AI chatbots for health-related advice, and even though GPT-5 doesn’t have the authority of a standing medical professional, it is the better language model for talking on the subject. In the HealthBench Hard Hallucinations, GPT-5 does dramatically better than GPT-4o and o3 models.
Additional features include a larger context window of up to 256,000 tokens, has undergone extensive risk assessment for producing safe answers, performs better with subjective domains, and gets four new preset personaliities (which alter how it responds): Nerd, Listener, Robot, and Cynic.
Moreover, people can use the GPT-5 model for a multitude of use cases, including writing and content creation (though I’ll stay away from it, for good), coding and software development, enterprise tools, healthcare and legal fields, multimodal contexts, and general consumer use that entails help with day-to-day reasoning and decision-making tasks.
How Many Different Versions Of GPT-5 Are There?
The latest language model is available in three versions or sizes for developers: GPT-5, GPT-5-mini, and GPT-5-nano. Further, there’s a GPT-5 Pro (with additional computational resources at disposal), which is available to the Pro subscribers.

Is GPT-5 Free, Or Do You Have To Pay For It?
You might think that the latest language model from OpenAI might be locked behind a paywall, but that’s not the case. Even if you’re a free user, you can access GPT-5 via ChatGPT. However, paid subscribers have access to higher usage limits.
To me, it sounds like OpenAI might want to train its language model with more human interaction, but either way, it is a great step to let everyone use the latest AI model.
