How To Make Meta Avatar Video Calls on Instagram and Messenger?

Earlier on Wednesday, Meta announced an extension to the world of avatars wherein users can now make video calls on Messenger and Instagram using their avatar. The move has been much-awaited and can be a great tool for those who might not be camera-ready at the time of receiving a video call or the background is messy, etc. All your friends see is an animated video feed that mimics your actions and reactions.

Available on both iOS and Android, the feature is rolling out under the title “Meta Avatar” and will be available across a plethora of assets including Reels, Facebook Stories, video calls on Instagram and Messenger, etc. The feature is available for 1:1 threads on both platforms but it goes without saying, soon you will be using it on group video calls as well.

How To Make Meta Avatar Video Calls on Instagram and Messenger?

Now that Meta Avatar is here, there’s no reason to avoid a video call. All you can do is let your avatar do the talking for you. No messy hair or background, it’s just your digital animated twin that copies all your moves and feeds it directly to the recipient callers. Perhaps, both the caller and recipient can end up in a 1:1 full-on animated video call using this feature as well.

How To Create an Avatar On Instagram and Messenger?

  • First up, launch an Instagram or Messenger app on your iOS or Android smartphone.
  • Go to your “Profile >> Edit Profile“.
  • You will find a “Create Avatar” button or an icon beside your profile picture. You should get a pop-up “Create Avatar”.
  • Proceed with the on-screen instructions including selecting skin color tone, hairstyle, etc. tapping on “Next” to proceed.
  • Finally, tap on “Done” and “Save Changes” which should automatically create your avatar.
  • You can sync Instagram and Facebook profiles in order to use the same avatar across the platforms.  

How To Use Avatar On Video Calls on Instagram or Facebook?

  • To get started, all you have to do is to launch Instagram or Messenger on your device.
  • Proceed to make a video call or someone you know as usual.
  • Next, tap on the “Avatar” option located on the left pane.
  • You should be able to see yourself as an avatar instead of your video feed. The same will be shown to the recipient who can choose whether they want to use Avatar too or not.
