5.5G, also known as 5G-Advanced, is the next step in mobile network evolution. It builds on 5G with faster speeds, reduced latency, and improved reliability. This technology, currently only available via Jio, uses multi-cell connectivity, enabling your smartphone to connect to several network cells simultaneously for an even faster network speed. In this article, we will see how you can enjoy 5.5G on your OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R.

Key Features of 5.5G

1. Faster Speeds: Download speeds reach up to 1,014.86 Mbps—almost four times faster than traditional 5G.

2. Multi-Cell Connections: Links your device to three network cells at once for enhanced speed and stability.

3. Low Latency: Reduces delays, making it perfect for gaming and real-time applications.

4. Crowded Area Optimization: 5.5G is supposed to maintain stable connections even in dense urban or high-traffic zones.

5. SA Only: 5.5G uses a standalone architecture unlike 5G, which uses both NSA and SA. This is the reason why Airtel is unable to bring 5.5G (they use NSA 5G).

How to Use 5.5G on OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R

The OnePlus 13 (review) and OnePlus 13R (review) are the first smartphones in India to support 5.5G, exclusively on Jio’s network. Here’s how you can enjoy 5.5G on these devices:

  • Firstly, your phone will automatically connect to Jio’s 5.5G network when it’s available. Make sure you are using a Jio SIM card.
  • You’ll see a new “5GA” icon on your status bar, indicating you’re using 5.5G.

The Catch: Still Rolling Out

While 5.5G sounds impressive, there’s a reality check. Jio’s 5.5G network is rolling out in stages, meaning availability is limited right now. Even regular 5G services are still in the early stages of adoption for many. So, while OnePlus 13/13R users have the hardware advantage, enjoying the full potential of 5.5G might take some time, depending on your location.
