While Apple and Samsung have been quite busy drafting renders and blueprints for a foldable with a wider aspect ratio, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei just dropped the Pura X Max.
On April 13, 2026, the tech giant officially confirmed its wide-format foldable, and a launch event is locked in for April 20, 2026, exclusively for the Chinese launch of the smartphone.

What Exactly Makes The Pura X Max Different?
Unlike conventional foldables that open tall and narrow — think the Galaxy Z Fold 7 or the OnePlus Open, the Pura X Max adopts a horizontal folding mechanism, which results in a not-so-taller but wider internal display.
When unfolded, the device features a 7.69-inch WQHD+ inner screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. When folded, people can use the 5.5-inch outer screen. This approach makes the foldable feel less like a phone and more like a compact, small-screen tablet when unfolded.
For daily users, the wider format should result in fewer black bars (at the top and the bottom) while viewing content on the inner screen, resulting in a more natural and immersive experience. Further, it should also provide a natural grip, one that compact tablet owners are already accustomed to.

How Does This Affect The Foldable Market, And You?

Under the hood, the Pura X Max sports Huawei’s Kirin 9030 chip and runs on the HarmonyOS 6. Other key specifications include a Red Maple quad-camera system on the back and a 5,500 mAh battery that supports 100W wired charging.
The timing of announcing the Pura X Max is quite deliberate and intentional. The Cupertino giant is already working on its first foldable with a tablet-like aspect ratio, possibly breaking cover in September.
Meanwhile, Samsung is also working on the Galaxy Z Fold Wide, which could arrive with the rest of the Fold 8 lineup at the second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year in July 2026. However, nobody can challenge one thing now — Huawei got here first.
Pricing of the Huawei Pura X Max is believed to start from CNY 10,000 or $1,465. Pre-orders are already live in China, and shipping could begin soon after the launch event.
