Huawei’s new tri-fold costs three times of iPhone 16 Pro

Aiming to upstage Apple, Huawei today unveiled the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, in China. Huawei is fiercely competing with Apple in its home market, and this launch is likely to give them an advantage.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design Specifications

We’ve seen countless leaks about this phone in the past week. The Mate XT is a 6.4-inch FHD+ screen smartphone when folded, a 7.9-inch 2K screen mini-tablet when half-open, and a 10.2-inch tablet with a 3K screen when fully opened.

The phone boasts an LTPO OLED panel with 1440 Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and a 120Hz refresh rate. Huawei claims the panel used is made of multi-directional bending flexible materials and is 25% more improved than standard foldable displays. It also features the industry’s largest UTG glass, offering double the impact resistance.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design

The Huawei Mate XT is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 9010 SoC paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. It runs Android 14-based HarmonyOS 4.2 with a promise of future software version upgrades.

In terms of optics, the Mate XT gets a triple camera setup on the rear: a 50MP primary camera supporting variable aperture (f/1.4 – f/4.0), a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 12MP 5.5x periscope telephoto lens. Selfies are handled by an 8MP camera.

Other specs include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, both 4G and 5G connectivity, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.2 LE, NFC, USB 3.1 Type-C, and a 5,600mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging support.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design Pricing & Availability

The HUAWEI Mate XT Ultimate Design comes in Black and Red color options and will go on sale starting September 20th in China. The base 16GB+256GB option starts at 199,999 yuan (USD 2800 / Rs. 235,900 approx.), the 16GB+512GB option costs 219,999 yuan (USD 3100 / Rs. 260,000 approx.), while the top-end 16GB+1TB version costs 239,999 yuan (USD 3400 / Rs. 283,000 approx.).
