I Used Both Flip and Fold; And I Think I Found My Favorite

I started with a book-style foldable. The vivo X Fold5 (review) was my first proper foldable experience. It had all the right specs on paper, large inner display, great battery life, powerful hardware, but after using it for a few days, I realized I wasn’t actually making the most of that big screen. Most of the time, I just ended up using the outer display like a normal phone.

Then came the Galaxy Z Flip7. I wasn’t expecting it to change much, but the more I used it, the more I started reaching for it over any other device. And after using both, I think I’ve found my favorite form factor.

Why the Flip Works for Me

Galaxy Z Flip7

Here are four reasons why I think the Flip is better suited for me.

Reason 1

First, it’s the vlogging and selfie experience. With the Flip7, I can just fold the phone, open the camera on the cover screen, start shooting or recording myself. All of this using the great main camera which is 1/1.56 inches. Or, I can place it on any surface, and start recording myself. No tripod needed.

Z Flip7

You might say a Fold phone can do the same things; but it’s just way more convenient on a Flip. When you fold a Flip, it becomes half the size of a regular phone, so carrying it or propping it up is super easy.

But with a Fold, if you want to use the rear camera for selfies, you have to open it all the way, and now you’re basically holding two phones stacked together. That’s the issue. It gets too big for me to handle with one hand.

The new edge-to-edge cover screen is big, beautiful, and functional. I can directly access Photo, Portrait, and Video modes from here. And sure, if I want to shoot someone else, I do need to open the phone; but that’s not as convenient as you might think.

Second, the cover screen experience. With the help of Good Lock and the MultiStar module, I can run full apps on the cover screen. I’ve set up a custom launcher, and I can resize apps too.

The only things I truly miss are Circle to Search and better customization for Quick Settings. But the upsides outweigh those minor drawbacks. And when I’m using the cover screen, I’m not bombarded with notifications, so that’s a win.

Third, less distraction, more intention. With the cover screen, I only do what I intended to do. No doomscrolling (although I do that sometimes with Instagram). No endless checking of stuff. Just open the camera, or respond to a quick message, or check your socials. It’s simple.

And finally, there’s just something fun and satisfying about the Flip. The act of snapping it shut. The small form factor (I love small phones). The way you can use it as a camcorder. It’s not just a phone; rather it’s a tool that makes my lifestyle better than any slab or tablet-style foldable ever has.

As for the Flip7 as a whole, it’s not perfect, but it’s the form factor that I prefer. And I think that’s the whole point.
